Chatting to a copper
I was on a training course today and one of the guys was a police officer, who said he is part of a rapid response team.
He was echoing much of what I have heard before about how difficult their job is these days. He said that in the past few years things have got really bad since CPS are now making all the decisions, as he said previously if someone deserved to go to court he was able to make his case to the duty sergeant. He says that since the changes were made a few years ago, some faceless desk jockey at CPS now makes the decision and they do not proceed with about 80% of cases.
He says in the past he has asked CPS what extra they need, but generally there has to be a cast iron 80% chance of a conviction for them to proceed. He says it is completely soul destroying to complete 3-4 hours of paperwork for CPS to throw the case away.
I mentioned what I always say about saying ' I didn't do it' when caught and he agreed, that saying in your statement that you didn't do it is most likely to see the case dropped by CPS compared to someone holding their hands up.
It was interesting to hear that, although from the same force that covers my are he does not work my area but he did know some of the scum family names.
PS.
He says the worst part of his job is that he has to explain to victims that they are not proceeding, and this for serious crimes is usually face to face not over the phone. It annoys him that he has to do this and face the dissapointed victim and not the desk jockey at CPS.
