Chatting to a copper

I was on a training course today and one of the guys was a police officer, who said he is part of a rapid response team.

He was echoing much of what I have heard before about how difficult their job is these days. He said that in the past few years things have got really bad since CPS are now making all the decisions, as he said previously if someone deserved to go to court he was able to make his case to the duty sergeant. He says that since the changes were made a few years ago, some faceless desk jockey at CPS now makes the decision and they do not proceed with about 80% of cases.

He says in the past he has asked CPS what extra they need, but generally there has to be a cast iron 80% chance of a conviction for them to proceed. He says it is completely soul destroying to complete 3-4 hours of paperwork for CPS to throw the case away.

I mentioned what I always say about saying ' I didn't do it' when caught and he agreed, that saying in your statement that you didn't do it is most likely to see the case dropped by CPS compared to someone holding their hands up.

It was interesting to hear that, although from the same force that covers my are he does not work my area but he did know some of the scum family names.

PS.

He says the worst part of his job is that he has to explain to victims that they are not proceeding, and this for serious crimes is usually face to face not over the phone. It annoys him that he has to do this and face the dissapointed victim and not the desk jockey at CPS.

Re: Chatting to a copper

Our neighbour was severly beaten by several of his inlaws, in his own home, deeply cut with glass shards (face and back) and kicked whilst unconscious... in front of a gathering crowd who were too scared to intervene.

CPS kicked it out as he had "consumed alcohol".

No chance of criminal compo either... they used the same excuse not to pay out.

And once again I'm so glad the CPS don't have their grubby fingers stuck into the Policing system in Scotland (yet)

hmm if they are interested see

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7555299.stm

this i was led to believe applied to assault cases to

have to agree the biggest problem for justice in this country now is the CPS and those in it unwilling to work on cases that might actually require some work to get a conviction
