Extractor Fan
Hi,
The extractor fan in or bathroom has just gone kaput!
I heard it click and now when we switch it on, I can hear the motor trying to run - like a small hummmmm.
Anybody know what may have happened?
It's under a year old but I'll report it to the house builders to get it fixed.
Yes I have switched it off!
Any ideas?
Lee

Re: Extractor Fan
Just like pc fans they do get clogged with dust and fluff. The combination of fluff and steam can be like cement.
Thats the first thing I'd check. See if you can get a wire or something in there and check that the fan turns freely.
I've got a few of these around my shower rooms and I find I have to clean them yearly.

Re: Extractor Fan
It could be that the capacitor has gone belly up, if you can ( safely ) flick the fan with a screw driver to start the fan spinning then I would try that when it's switched on of course, or as you say, if it's under retention / warranty with the builder do it that way.

Re: Extractor Fan
Not sure, before you get that far, can you get to the blades without taking it apart, long thin driver or butter knife, just to give it a flick when switched on.

Re: Extractor Fan
theres probably caps covering up the screws, which look like they can be remove, just use a screwdriver to pop them out and the rest should be straight forward.

Re: Extractor Fan
Most of the ones I have here don't have screws for the top cover. Normally the moulded top cover has a couple of little tabs that snap into slots in the chassis.
I'm normally able to pop these off with a little gentle screwdriver action.
Be warned there could be live 'leccy connections underneath so proceed with caution.

Re: Extractor Fan
As it's under warranty I wouldn't mess around with it, as whoever comes out to check / replace it will check for any visible damage and if you start taking it apart you could damage something. Even if it's just a head of a screw, could be taken that you're been messing around inside, thus voiding any warranty. As Zing says / does, just open a window (or two, if it's really smelly )
