They employer is obviously trying to get round the rights that kick in after 12 months. The law is a bit vague about this ; "the employment can be considered continuous provided there is no substantial interval between the end of the "old" contract and the start of the "new" one". I did find reference to one break of 10 days where a tribunal counted the periods of employment as continuous but it does seem to be a bit a grey area.
The rate that jobs are disappearing it's probably best if your mate keeps his head down and gets on with it.
