Speed Cameras
I just wanted to know the exact speed which the UK speed cameras flash when you go over the speed limit?
Speed Cameras:
30mph?
40 mph?
50 mph?
60 mph?
70mph?
mobile/police cameras?
Any others?
How do the speed cameras work if there is two lanes on 50 mph dual carrage way and if one car is speeding in a lane, does it pick up both the vehicles (in both lanes?
Im not thinking of speeding or anything, just wanted to know.
Thanks

Re: Speed Cameras
It depends on the rules agreed within the local safety camera partnership that runs them. 10% +1 is a good rule of thumb, but I wouldn't rely on it. Some of the real camera Nazis out there will do you for going over the limit by the merest fraction.
On a dual carriageway, there are speed markers painted on both lanes so both cars caught in the photos will have their speed recorded.

What about on a standard road, can a 30 mph speed camera get you if your on the wrong lane speeding?

Re: Speed Cameras
As the accuracy of car speedos is +/- 10%, all cameras are set up to activate at 10% + 2 mph above the limit. For 30 mph zone the setting is 35, if you go above, you'll be flashed.

Are you sure you don't get flashed at 34 mph or over with 30 mph Gatso cameras?

Yes, I'm sure, 34 is OK, 35 might be questionable...

I have heard of Gatsos that will flash you at 33, others at 37. As I said before, it depends on the local safety camera partnership.
And you can get caught on the wrong side of the road.

They don't do this, as it will not stand in court. If you're caught doing 33, it might just be your speedo showing a little less than the actual speed is, and that is absolutely possible with the speedo calibrations. Provided that the speedos (most of them at least) are analogue, 1-2 miles are just the vibration of the needle...

Re: Speed Cameras
What about the Motorway mobile/police speed cameras/lasers. I heard that you can be speeding up to 79 mph and you'll be ok, but if your doing 79 mph + then you get fined/points, is this true?
Thanks

Not correct car speedos always over read, in fact they are always close to the maximum over-read - you can now check with GPS o long straight stretch, old fashioned method was stopwatch and the 100m posts on motorways (time a km). More info

My speedo consistently reads 5mph higher than the speed displayed by my satnav at 'motorway' speeds, i.e. 70mph on the speedo shows as 65mph on the satnav - by 'consistently' I mean while monitored during two journeys of nearly 300 miles, where the satnav information tied in exactly with the eta it predicted for each..

All speed cameras are set to go off at 6MPH above the speed limit.

The accuracy of the speedo in this case is irrelevant as it's against the law for a speedo to under-read.... But the acceptable limits for speed camera activation will vary from area to area but it's normally accepted to be 10% +1,2 or 3 miles per hour...
