Sluggish Car
Hi
When I started my car this morning the engine seemed to have to struggle to idle. I noticed when driving that my fuel economy was a lot lower than what I normally achieve; the engine seemed to need to have higher revs for the speed I was travelling at. When I parked up there was a strong smell in the car
I topped up with petrol yesterday - is it possible that this could be the source of the problem?
Cheers
Chris

Re: Sluggish Car
If you can smell petrol then there's either too strong a mix going through or one of the spark plugs has gone down...or could very simply be a case bad petrol...
The mixture is done via the closed Lamda loop in a fuel injected car, if one of the components goes down then it'll screw up the mixture...though something as simple as a clogged air filter can do exactly the same thing...
If a plug/lead or cap is breaking down then petrol will be unburnt....Have you had any backfiring??? If not then doubt if it's the plugs and probably to strong a mix...

Re: Sluggish Car
I doubt just topping up with fuel (unless there was the possibility of it being contaminated) will be the issue.

Re: Sluggish Car
Ok - thats fine. I have a warranty on the car so I can get it looked at, I just wanted to explore the contaminated fuel route to see if I needed to inform people in the area

Re: Sluggish Car
As it happens - yes
I did notice the other day that my exhaust gave off a large cloud (when I was reversing) - but I haven't noticed it since. I also drove through a thick cloud of exhaust from a land rover last week - it let it off just as I was passing it. It was so bad I had to lower my windows to vent

Re: Sluggish Car
Try giving the engine a good old hard rev. Don't hit the red-line obviously, that would cause damage, but a good old rev can often do it a world of good by helping to clear any carbon thats managed to find a place to lodge itself in the engine or injectors.
Failing that, do all the usual tests and changes: Spark plugs, high voltage cables, air filter, fuel filter.

Re: Sluggish Car
Injector/carburetter cleaner in the petrol is a good idea too... cleans out a lot of fouling gunk.
