Double glazing - replacement window

One of our double glazed windows has cracked during the recent cold spell. I'm assuming this was due to a broken seal and damp getting in, but what do I know...

Anyway, before I call the cowboys, does anyone know how much I should expect to pay to have the glass replaced? The window is about 80 x 70 cm. Also, can anyone recommend a reputable national company?

Thankfully, we already have double glazing throughout, so we won't have to endure pushy sales tactics.

Re: Double glazing - replacement window

If you can work out how the beading is attached you should be able to do it as a DIY job, providing you can order up a replacement unit for yourself. Failing that, you don't need a double-glazing installation company, any local glazier will be able to order the part and fit it for you.

IIRC a unit of that size isn't very expensive ...

Re: Double glazing - replacement window

Cheers, I'm not too keen on the DIY aspect, seeing the window is cracked, and it's on the first floor, so I'll try a glazier.

Re: Double glazing - replacement window

The sealed unit should come out from the inside. Blunt knife tease out the black bead, unclip\pull off the white surround, replace glass, refit white surround, refit bead.
Shouldnt take more than 15 mins to exchange a sealed unit (well thats the time I got when I was a fitter in the late 80's doing snagging)

As for price I would expect to pay around £50-60 (or less) for the sealed unit

Cheers, I called a local glazier who quoted me £85 inc VAT and fitting, which doesn't sound too bad to me. He's already been out to take the measurements. Must have been a slow day

Re: Double glazing - replacement window

your double glazed unit is £23 + VAT (or thats what we would charge) , so the fitting charge sounds a little excessive to me , what area you in ??
