Global warming saves the day
I was sat on my throne thumbing through Novembers New Scientist (as you do lol ) and I come across an article that I found interesting. Basically what they are saying is that if we had not pumped all the CO2 into the atmosphere then in approx 100,000 year the Earth would be going into a Super Ice Age which would have been very difficult to live in.
Quote:
|
Had we not radically altered the atmosphere, say Thomas Crowley of the University of Edinburgh, UK, and William Hyde of the University of Toronto in Canada, the current cycle of ice ages and interglacials would have given way in the not-too-distant future to an ice age lasting millions of years
|
as with all science its just a theory but the Earth has always been going through volatile weather and its not that long in real terms that the poles had no ice and it was a hell of a lot hotter than it is today.
Anyway its a very interesting article that could for our future kind mean our polluting nature may have given us humans a few extra million years on the planet

None of the researchers contacted by New Scientist thought the model's predictions are worth taking seriously.
|
But lo it is published because it supports a political point of view.

But I remember years ago at school being told that the planet could well be running into another ice age. The fluctuation in temperature are nothing new just because it helps from a political viewpoint does not make it untrue. If you believe in science then you have to understand that the climate has changed countless times already

I was told at school that nuclear fusion doesn't exist and the big bang was the sun shooting out the planets.
I'm not saying its untrue, I'm saying its a double standard which biases perspective. It's a tragedy that I'm only aware of some incredibly interesting experiments simply because they **** of religious people.
I was given an exercise to write a computer model simulating orbits, the earth looped fine a few times then suddenly shot out of the solar system. If the doom sayers had got hold of it would have said "Physics model predicts earth's doom".

Re: Global warming saves the day
well we all know science says the Earth has a finite life just as the sun and the stars do and one day all the energy will be just gone so everything is futile anyway. It is very naive and narcissistic for us humans to think its all our fault other than thinking the planet has changed countless times and it will countless times again (all if science is correct and creation isnt of course)

Your view is not wrong but the truth will come down to numbers. Did the dodoo go extinct because of humans or would it have gone extinct at that time anyway? That answer comes down to numbers.
Do panda's deserve to go extinct since they don't have the (for lack of a better word) "balls" to mate in captivity. That is a moral one.

Your right it is. I'm just bitching because there are many other things that don't get the exposure.

Re: Global warming saves the day
The last part in the piece summed up the correct message to draw imho.
Quote:
|
Instead, we are putting the planet's climate on the opposite trajectory, back towards "hothouse Earth" conditions.
