How much off the sticker price for a used car?
I found a 2008(57) VW Golf 1.4S (12000 miles) with a sticker price of £7995 (VW dealer). How much should I offer? I googled it but no clear advice

go in really low, they can't give cars away at the moment.

The trick is to never settle for the face value. If they won't budge on the price, look for extras, free tank of petrol, alloys, that sort of thing.

Re: How much off the sticker price for a used car?
right now you'd have to be nuts to pay full price.
I went into a ford garage last week and haggled easily a brand new fiesta (old model) diesel for £8100 with high features spec. RRP around £11000. that was the first price he gave me - I recon I could have got more off.

new cars/used cars - either - it's a buyers market. haggle like mad cos in a few months that car you've just bought could be for sale a grand or 2 cheaper!
if they wont do a deal walk away - the car you're looking at is unlikely to be going anywhere fast!

every car maker in the world is dropping production ,no ones buying ,,.
i would exploit that to my advantage.

Re: How much off the sticker price for a used car?
I'd say it's not so much about how much is knocked off, but what it's worth. Asking prices are irrelevant really. Offer well below what Parkers and Glass's say it's worth, regardless of the asking price. Take printouts of any valuations you get (in your pocket, to bring out at the right moment), provided they're low.
The best advice I ever heard (before we bought our house) was...
If your first offer doesn't embarrass you then it's too high.
My other half runs away and hides when I start bartering. Also remember that car dealers could win oscars with their acting. I sold a car to a dealer for a very good price after he'd said he wasn't at all interested!
And leave your number and walk away if he won't play. He will ring if your offer is reasonable for the age and condition.

If it's a 5-door then, from Parker's:
Original Price£12,755 Franchised Dealer£9,185 Independent Dealer£9,020 Private Good £8,610 Private Poor £7,215 Part Exchange£7,955
So I'd say the asking price is pretty keen already. But still well worth starting at £6k.
I'd suggest that, rather than arguing about its value (you can't), just say that you definitely want it but £6k is all you can afford. Don't worry about increasing this after, car dealers are not offended by fibbing - it's what they do all day.
And use the "power of the silence". If you offer and there's an uncomfortable silence just wait for him to speak first.

Re: How much off the sticker price for a used car?
defo go at least 1K off the sticker to start. in todays climate, go 2K and let him 'work' you up to 1k off. I tend to have an amount I feel is fair in my head, then double the amount I'm taking off and ask for that. that way, you get a bargain if it's more than you planned and the dealer feels he's done well to make you agree on a higher price than you offered!
be cheeky... what's the worst that will happen? they'll say no... so what?
