I know as a motorist I am allowed to proceed with caution once I have concluded that the light are not working, but the argument by an officer writing out the ticket would probably be that the lights are working.

These particular lights involve driving through them to gain a good view of traffic if you are to proceed on red.

Well indeed. I am just saying that police have said something like if you're sat on a sensor and it doesn't activate for 2/3 cycles then you can regard that as not working properly as the issue has come up. It is funny how settings on the sensors vary. On another set of lights near a park the lights are always on red and you can see them from a good distance away yet on that set I never have problems them activating and in time to just roll through without stopping.

The problem with this particular set, is they are only for a junction that is access to only one building. I believe there is no cycle as such for these lights, and they will only ever change if a vehicle is detected from either the side road (From the car park) or those vehicles on the main road waiting in the separate filtered lane that has seperate lights to turn right.

Traffic coming in the other direction turning left into the side road have no seperate light/lane, so they see a green light 90% of the time.

There is no 2/3 cycles to decide if they are not working, so I guess it will be a trip to court if a copper gives me a ticket.

Re: Traffic Light observation

I think I know what you mean. It is a shame and I don't know why they put in all these tiny dedicated units. The only other way is like a dual carriageway round here traffic is dominant on the main road and it goes red, green, red, green, and traffic builds up for no traffic coming out, at certain times.

Perhaps a letter off to the local council? Sensitivity has been changed on sensors sometimes when people write in. A set of lights near me had it's phase tripled, people wrote in and it got changed back a couple of weeks later.

Re: Traffic Light observation

I once did some work with someone who made the sensors. He said the best place for a bike to get detected is about a foot in from the edge of the diamond.
