Sick pay?

Hi,
A woman who works with me has been off sick for a couple of weeks and returned yesterday but was told today that she will only be getting statutary sick pay.
She has been with the company for about a year and is full time and not under any disciplinary out of her probationary period.
Does anyone know if this is legal? as I thought all companies had to pay either full aor partial wage

Re: Sick pay?

My employer only pays people with more than 3 years service full pay if off sick.

I'm 40 and have had loads of jobs and this is the first company that doesn't pay sick pay, even the really crap companies paid at least 80%.

don't go off sick, then

I'm 55 & previously worked for a company who paid full sick pay - they made me redundant ...

My new employers don't pay full sick pay - they do, however pay 12.5% bonus to people hitting targets which include less than 5 days sick per year - go figure ...

Re: Sick pay?

I take it likea lot of people, you and your colleague didn't read your contract before signing it?

I was signed off for a month due to high stress brought on by my appauling manager.
After 11 days I had the HR director (looks and acts just like Catbert) phone to say if I didn't come back I wouldn't get any pay.
Thankfully I had enough in the bank to cover the loss.
Of course there was a clause that sick pay could be extended at manager's discresion, and you'd have thought that as my chest pains were caused by my manager's harassment, they'd have done the decent thing, but then again, they aren't a decent company.

Re: Sick pay?

You can claim SSP after 3 days and carry on claiming it for 28 weeks.
As far as I'm awear you don't have to offer any company sick pay if you choose not too.

Re: Sick pay?

That is 100 per cent correct the company does not have to offer CSP

I would say you have just been lucky who you have worked for.

SSP exists for a reason, if companies had to pay sick pay then SSP wouldn't be needed.

Some people arent even entitled to SSP (temps).

Re: Sick pay?

Have worked for companies that paid both ends of the scale, from 100% full pay to the present where 'if' I were to go on the sick I would get ssp after 3 days.
