Camera Lens - busted?

I was given a nice little 50mm Canon EF 50 but the auto-focus is kaput.
Anyone know if this is a lost cause? Obviously not economical to repair, wondering if anyone knows anything I can try?

Re: Camera Lens - busted?

It probably is uneconomical to even contemplate having it repaired.

Which EF50 is it and what are you mounting it to?

I take it you have checked the health of the contacts on the mouting ring of the lens itself.

Hiya mate.

It's the 1:1.8 and on an EOS 400D

Yeah, checked everything I can.
Works fine MF anyway, was just worth a shout out.

Re: Camera Lens - busted?

Ah not to worry, you're probably better with MF for what you'd use it for anyway. Nice little lens for the cash that though, better than the kit one you get with the 400.

Re: Camera Lens - busted?

Yeah, it's a cracking lens. And nicer because it was given to me for nothing.

This one? If it is £62.92 new then repair is uneconomic.

Yep that's the one.
Yes, I did mention I thought it'd be uneconomic to repair.
Worth a shot mentioning though in case anyone had any secret super-duper tips up their sleeve.

You did mention you thought it uneconomic. You could try some gentle percussive maintainance?

A jiggle here and there?
Yeah, I'm going to have a play with the AF/M switch later. It doesn't feel as positive as it should.

Percussive Maintenance
Def - The fine art of bludgeoning an electronic device in order to encourage it to work properly. Vigorous usage of this technique often renders said device permanently nonfunctional.
Example - My goddamned monitor was flickering until I used some percussive maintenance; now it's totally dead and Help Desk is bringing me a new one.

Well, any maintenance ('percussive' or otherwise) hasn't proven fruitful.
Manual focus only for me on this one - no biggie.

Just whopped mine out on the desk, i think the four screws on the end would give you access to the other side of the switch. Bit risky though

Any use for a quote?

Cheers. Worth finding out how much, given that I paid zilch for it. It;s a great lens.
I'm not adverse to pulling things apart, but would hate to ruin it completely.

Given that they're the only screws can't see how it would cause a problem just to look. It's bound to be an electical switch and might just be worth spraying some solvent into the switch.
