What does space smell of?
After reading this,
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7645005.stm
I did a google search and found out a space tourist said it smells of ‘burnt almond biscuits’.
But surely it would just smell of what ever your helmet smells of as you cannot take it off??
Or your face would collapse if you took your helmet off.
Whats your thoughts or is it a stupid question?
.

Re: What does space smell of?
In theory you shouldn't be able to tell what space smells of.
In order to smell I would imagine that you need to be able to inhale the particles that contain the smell, as there's nothing for you to inhale that shouldn't be possible - unless I've missed something.
If I try to imagine space smelling of something my mind always comes up with a smell which is a bit like vanilla for some reason

Re: What does space smell of?
You'd smell whatever molecules are there, maybe hydrogen. I suspect your face wouldn't collapse, but would probably explode as the pressure in your skull tries to get out.

There is a list of molecules found in space here, so you should be able to smell whatever they smell of if you came across a patch of space which had any of them in it.

Re: What does space smell of?
why don't they send up some expensive rocket with a few guys and collect some space then bring it back to earth to be smelled by experts???
I can see spacement tryin to collect it with carrier bags to fill up and twist to keep in the smell
but really, if someone wants to know what space smells like, I want to know what a nebula cloud tastes like???

Surely they'd be better off trapping it under the duvet? That's what I do

Try sniffing water whilst your head is under it.
