Posh Hotel + Room Service = Tip OR No Tip?
Pretty simple really.
I'm in a nice (ish) hotel, there's room service available which (being too lazy, and having plenty to do anyway, to go anywhere) I will be abusing.....I mean, taking advantage of.....
There's a 'Tray Charge' added to the cost of the meal.
Do you tip, or not tip, the person that brings it to you?
If you do tip, how much?

Re: Posh Hotel + Room Service = Tip OR No Tip?
'Cos I'm tight I wouldn't tip, I look at it and think do I get a tip for my job, nope, why should I tip them!! If I had to tip it would be no more than £2, but I'm tight it would be a big fat £0
Use and abuse room service, think if you don't tip you could get more room service

I stay away for busines most weeks, never tip room service even at the Malmaison and im not tight in the slightest.
They know most people travel for business and therefore dont pay for stuff out of their own pockets.

Re: Posh Hotel + Room Service = Tip OR No Tip?
Well..I've worked in hotels for over 6 years and i did a lot of room service.
Some people think leaving a tip in the room on checkout will cover tippage for all service but unfortunately the room maids will just pocket that.
I think it's nice when you get even £1, more if you've been particularly awkward, providing your service was quick and up to scratch. The waiter/ess won't see a penny of that tray charge, and he's most likely on minimum wage, which they paid us for a toughish job as managers seemed to think tips would make up for the low wage...
Tips in hotels are generally rare, because people tend to charge their food and drinks to their room so never have cash on them - it means a lot to the person who served you, and lugged the heavy tray to your room if you give as little as 50p.
But i'm biased of course.

Surely tray charge is the hotel's way of covering the cost of bringing the stuff via room service to you, i.e. paying for the room service bod's wages, etc, as opposed to the comparative cost of you going down to the restaurant / bar / whatever. On that basis i probably would tip something, not an excessive amount, but something.

I usually tip 10% or so, rounding up - but remember you can't claim tips on your expenses......

A typical nail-head hitting statement.
I used to tip at 10-15%, which after taxis, room service, waitresses, etc. could easily come to £10 per day. A two-week stay soon adds up to a tidy sum, all of which comes from my pocket.
I now only tip occasionally, and even then only if the service has been friendly and efficient. But when I win the lottery...

Re: Posh Hotel + Room Service = Tip OR No Tip?
The tray charge is added for room service purely as it takes longer for someone to get it to you than the standard waiter in the restaurant. This is paid to the hotel and isn't a tip.
In the end it's upto you to tip the person or not...

If I was you I would not tip and instead see what the service is like until the end of your trip.
If on the last day you feel happy with the serices you have had, then tip.
Don't feel obliged to tip. It's up to you.
At the end of the day they do still get paid.

Re: Posh Hotel + Room Service = Tip OR No Tip?
Don't know why but I never tip in UK hotels though I always give a big tip to cab drivers. The hotels I stay in are usually around £200 a night and as far as I know no-one's ever spat in my meal. At least to the extent that it makes it taste different

Re: Posh Hotel + Room Service = Tip OR No Tip?
10% or more if you're pleased or really pleased with the service and no obligation to pay a penny if you're not... and it's worth telling the management why you aren't.
I always tip cabbies, waiters/waitresess, salons, room service and room maid........... but only when I'm leaving.
If you want to (try to) ensure good service then tip in advance.
