Should I be worried about my dog

Around here we put our bin bags out on the street and not in a bin. So we just put our black bags in the garden ready for collection day.

My dog wanted to go out so let her out in the garden and I heard the black bags getting well sounded like getting chucked about. Then I heard squealing. I ran outside and my dog come in with its nose covered in blood.

I grab her in and clean up the blood and she has a small cut on the end of her nose. Seems to off stopped now but she also had a small cut on her front paw which I to have cleaned up.

She managed to kill the rat well basically ripped its throat open.

Should I be worried about the dog or will she be ok?

She seems fine and was running about afterwards

Cheers

If you aren't sure, take her to a vet.

Re: Should I be worried about my dog

Also do NOT pick up the rat directly yourself, there's too many rats with Weils desease about that can be fatal to humans. In fact I'd have a quick word with your practice nurse explaining the situation as there was bound to be rat blood/faeces on the dog and in the sorrounding area (no need to panic but best to be on the safe side with yourself and the doggy)

Re: Should I be worried about my dog

Just phone the vets, if the cuts are small and not bleeding then I doubt they will do anything you havent already. Dogs are a lot tougher than most humans.

Should be fine if she's had her jabs. She's only doing what dogs do. What sort of dog is she?

Like whistled says - very tough are dogs

Re: Should I be worried about my dog

My father and elder brother had a large piece of land on which he used to keep pigs and poultry as well as growing tomatos and vegetables. The pig styes were at the bottom of the field along which a small stream ran.
There were drainage pipes which ran from each stye to the stream. Each morning i used to go with my father or brother to help feed the animals along with our dog which was a heinze 57, you know a cross breed. The fiirst thing my brother used to do was take a bucket of water into a stye and flush it down the drain and heinz 57 used to stand at the other end of the pipe, when the rat came out, snap, he would grab it by the neck and kill it, each time we put a notch on his collar.

Now one morning he didn't get hold of the rat right, it dropped on the floor and grabbed the dog on the leg, my brother shouted to me 'hit it with the bucket' I said 'what, the rat' he shouted 'yeah'. Well the dog was screaming and I dare not do anything incase I hit the dog, my brother pushed me to oneside and tried to hit the rat himself, but as he slightly hit it, it let go of the dog, jumped and happened to bite me on the leg. We went to the hospital so I could have a tetanus jab, I was only 7 at the time.

We never took the dog to the vets and he lived to a ripe old age and got through quite a few dog collars after each one was full of notches. Don't worry too much about the dog, just keep your eyes on him for a few days.
Make sure you didn't get any of the blood in any cuts if you have any.

My daughter has a Manchester Terrier that's just the same. She's probably despatched 50 or so up to now with no problems (except for the rats of course)

They live on a farm with cow barns nearby so there are always plenty of rats about.

Re: Should I be worried about my dog

Your dog will be fine mate, I've had hunting dogs and I've lost count of how many rats they've killed in their time, I used to take them to the vets when they came into contact with a rat, the vet said you don't have to bring them every time they get nipped by a rat, he said a dogs imune system is 2nd to none.
