Text Baby to 68666
Right I've just seen that really irritating advert, women with an irish accent saying "To know the name of your baby, text baby to 6866 and we will send back your future baby's name" and "Text Hub to 68666 and we will text your future husbands name"
So come on, who would actually text these numbers, for these reasons.... Blimey whilst typing shes come on again offering a love test and a love horoscope. This costs the person calling 3 quid aweek, I assume once you call once its some sort of subscription.
How is this company making money... Adverts on MTV Base, so it must cost something to air......Come on, has anyone texted these sorts of numbers?

Re: Text Baby to 68666
Groups of slightly inebriated students, lounging round their flat on a Friday night. I suspect the company behind this makes quite a tidy sum, even after paying for the ads.

I should imagine that a group of slightly inebriated students (assuming mixed sex) would be more interested in making babies than naming them...

Re: Text Baby to 68666
Alternatively, send me a pound and I'll sent you the name of your future baby, the name of your future husband AND I'll do you a love horoscope.
Save you a fortune!!

Re: Text Baby to 68666
seems to go against the trades description act really... I mean, what if the name they send you turns out to be wrong!?!?! can you sue them for it??? They'll soon stop making that 'tidy sum' previously mentioned!!!

Re: Text Baby to 68666
reminds me of the "tell the sex of your baby" one
The 'medium' tells you the sex of your future baby, says "a Boy" but writes down in the log 'a Girl'
So 50% of the time they are going to be right, they never complain, for those that do on checking the log - "it seems you must be mistaken - it says here a xxxx"
At least that ones only 50-50

You can set something like this up relatively cheaply..
Write a small program to pick a name at random (hell, you don't need to write it, just download one).
Get a PC with IVR software and hardware (£2,000 up).
Hire an actor/actress to read out the prompts (£150-£200) .
Get BT in to install a few lines (~£1000)
Advertise (~£10000)
You could probably install and advertise a system that can deal with a lot of customers for around £20,000. Bear in mind that a lot of these services actually subscribe you to some sort of weekly text thing, which can cost several pounds a week.
Combine that with the fact that you can almost guarantee that (particularly on Friday/Saturday nights) there will be several thousand drunk and/or stoned people watching TV at night, and drunk people can buy the most random things*.
* My particular piece de resistance is when I got drunk, walked into a 24 hour tescos and talked out with a packet of razor blades, five pairs of socks and a copy of the resident evil movie. I am still confused as to why I suddenly thought I needed socks at 4:30am.
However, that is beaten by a friend who woke up a couple of days after getting to find he had recieved a large parcel, containing about 30 feet of rope which he had apparently won on ebay after bidding while drunk.

Re: Text Baby to 68666
Actually, I was doing two things at once, so got mixed up with the thread subject.
But, yes, with just texts you could do for for a couple of grand..
