Screw The North, Says Tory Thinktank
What is it about the Tories and the North?
Quote:
Struggling northern cities will never be able to regenerate and should be given up, a Tory think-tank with close links to David Cameron concludes today.
Residents of cities such as Liverpool, Bradford and Sunderland should be encouraged to move to the more prosperous South-east, it says. A future government should build three million homes in and around London, Cambridge and Oxford to prompt Britain's biggest mass internal migration since the 19th century.

Note: this comes from Policy Exchange, a loony right-wing think tank that previously came up with the new Routemaster idea and half of Boris Johnson's team, including the BNP's favourite columnist, Anthony Browne. They have strong links to the neocons both at home and abroad.
If they weren't at least officially* right-wing you'd probably hear people denouncing the idea of forcing people to move across the country as Stalinist. Not to mention what the people of Cambridge and Oxford will say - Gordon Brown is in serious trouble with his comparitively tiny 'eco-towns' rubbish.
* They're quite well populated by that interesting political phenomenon known as the 'hard leftie turned hard rightie'. Such people are inherently bad news - they don't mind what they believe as long as it's extremist. Beware the zeal of the convert.

The idea sounds like tosh to me (not surprising if they're loonies really) but where does the term 'force' come into their argument?

Re: Screw The North, Says Tory Thinktank
Obviously failed selection for a safe Tory seat, and is still bitter.

Nor would I move North for that same amount of tea, what do you get in the North that you don't in the south and vice versa?

Re: Screw The North, Says Tory Thinktank
I'm very much in favour of all the Tories in the North moving to the South East...that'll make things a little more bearable for the rest of us and a little more unpleasant for them

Re: Screw The North, Says Tory Thinktank
It's scary to think that all these "think-tanks" and MP's are so out of touch with reality

Re: Screw The North, Says Tory Thinktank
We don't want everyone to move down here...there's not enough room for those of us already here and housing is already at a premium down here..
Utterly ridiculous tosh.Someone had too much fizzy juice at lunch when they came up with that as a suggestion.

Re: Screw The North, Says Tory Thinktank
It's a truly ludicrous suggestion in this day and age. We're living in age where the advances in communication are making the whole world a smaller place. I checked to see it wasn't April 1st when I saw this. What sense is there in forcing millions of people to move to an area where the infrastructure is already struggling - and the spaghetti crop is failing

Personal preference, although when I lived in the south, it was in London - hated it!! I just don't like big conurbations. I'm sure that there are many nice places in the south away from the cities, equally there are many nice places in the north, just don't want these think tanks telling me where to live.
I imagine that if there had been lots of heavy and dirty industry in the south which had closed, that there would be many deprived areas and derelect areas in the south.
Now what if York had become the capital......................
