Hedge - Who's responsibility?
Afternoon,
Behind our back fence we have a hedge, which is in a neighbouring property.
The hedge need trimming and some branches are overhanging into our garden.
The owner of the neighbouring property could not trim the hedge without accessing our garden.
Whats the best way to get it trimmed?
Cheers
Lee

Can you get a pair of sheers down in between?

Let him access your garden to trim it, or you could trim it. if your able.

Re: Hedge - Who's responsibility?
From another website:
Quote:
Hedges
Generally a hedge that separates two gardens will grow along the boundary of both properties and so it is the responsibility of both neighbours to keep it trimmed.
However, if a hedge belongs to one neighbour and is growing into next door's garden the next door neighbour is entitled to invite the owner to come round and give it a trim.
If a hedge is encroaching on a neighbour's garden, the neighbour is entitled to trim the hedge themselves, but must return the trimmings to the owner.
If a neighbour refuses to allow access to their garden it is possible to apply for access under the Access to Neighbouring Land Act 1992 and apply for a court order which will give access for the given work.

Re: Hedge - Who's responsibility?
As Kymmy's pointed out, if it's hanging over your garden you are allowed to trim it yourself but you must return the trimmings to your neighbour otherwise it's technically theft.
Best bet - ask them if they would like to come around and trim it, if they say no then tell them that you will trim it as it's overhanging their garden and then ask them what they would like you to do with the trimmings.

Re: Hedge - Who's responsibility?
Cool - confirmed what I thought. The branches are not really causing a nuisance yet, but I suspect all the rain / sun will make it grow a bit more this year.

Re: Hedge - Who's responsibility?
There's a site dedicated to hedges and the nuisance that they cause.

If you need to save up to get a gardener in to trim it...
Get the money from a hedge fund...

Re: Hedge - Who's responsibility?
Easy solution is what I do with the monstrosity that my neighbour has growing on her side of the fence, its all overgrown and blocks a lot of the sun out to our plants & flowers, so every now & then I get the trimmer on it and when I have finished I throw the bits back over to her side, she cant complain as she knows I have to return them to her, and she is hardly ever in anyways
