I work for Currys-need help with job description law
Hi All
been a while since i was on here.
in april i started working for currys digital as a salesman on 28hrs at 5.52 ph and its now gone up to 30hrs.
was informed today that on aug 15th we have a shop audit, which involves every member of staff starting at 6:am (meaning i have to get up around 4.45am to be picked up by another employee at around 5.30), we all get given a little PDA and told to count stock in our certain sections.
store opens at 9, sales staff go back to working as normal, stock and management continue the count. if need be, all staff will need to stay after 5.30 to help complete the count.
I wasnt ever told that i'd be needed to do such things as this and as a sales person i frankly dont see it as my responsibility.
i dont like the idea of getting up at 4.45am and only getting paid time and a half for 3 hrs and then whatever after 5.30.
i'm only contracted for 30hrs.
surely i should be able to refuse to do this, as if i remember rightly, my job description was as a sales advisor on the shop floor, advising people on products and processing transactions, replenishing stock as needed.
I dont have an actual copy of my contract at hand but i'll see my manager about getting one re-printed so i can check it clearly.
anyone help me out?

Re: I work for Currys-need help with job description law
Most JD's have a statement such as 'support manager in adhoc duties as required' I know all my own staffs do.
There is no way a JD would get you out of whats pretty standard duties in a shop!

Re: I work for Currys-need help with job description law
Yep, would definitely say just get on and do it.
If you don't you'll only cause friction between you and your boss, probably alienate your work colleagues who will all have turned in to do it, and lost out on the opportunity to earn a little extra cash.
Sure, it's not the greatest thing in the world to have to do, but it could be worse. I had to do similar things when I worked in a shop, for no extra money, for no thanks, and for no time off in lieu.

I'm in a totally different job but it says "or any other duties as and when required". This is in line with most jobs. Welcome to the real world.

Your contract provides states something like you will need to be able to work outside your normal hours once in a while in order to carry out your duties.
More than that though, Is it really worth the possible difficultys you may have with your boss for the sake of a few extras hours?

Re: I work for Currys-need help with job description law
This is perfectly Acceptable. I used to work for Electronics Boutique(Game) and when ever there was a stock take were helped out by staying after work and got it done. Also when setting up for sales and the like we all started early and stayed late.
At the end of the day you are being paid to help out, its not like you aren't getting paid for it.
Bit of extra money never hurt anyone

Re: I work for Currys-need help with job description law
Indeed, when I was still working I was expected to do stocktakes each year. If anyone didn't take part in them it was certainly looked on as a very bad thing.
I don't think it's unreasonable for a company to expect you to do this.
I guess you could press home the point and cause waves, that depends on how well you want to keep the job.

Re: I work for Currys-need help with job description law
never said i WOULDNT do it.
its just under the previous manager who hired me it wasnt ever explained to me that i would be needed to do this sort of thing.
Am prepared to do it, but i have only ever worked for independant companies before this and they had either 1 or two small shops. i worked in a 'goth shop' selling all sorts a weird rubbish, worked in a small record store, worked for 4 years in a shop that custom built pcs, havent worked for a large chain before.
so cut me some slack.
I had no idea this is common practice and I'm expected to do it, which is why i asked, but now i'm getting branded as some sorta non-team player cos i dont like to get up at 4.45am and travel to work and count stock.
i havent ever done anything like this before.
I just wanted to know if this was common practice or of the DSGI is taking a lend of its employees here.
to my mind with such a massive company i woulda assumed that they'd send in a proper audit team to help the stock guy sort it out.
I did an entire sunday moving around all the displays in the shop between 4 of us from10am to 8pm and was supposed to get a day in lieu but still havent had it yet, so when this came about i wondered what the heck was up.
I know its not worth the bother of causing a fuss with my boss.
i'll suck it up and do it, i just wanted to know where i stand
but now i'm some trouble maker for even just asking.
See, my dad used to be a leccy for Northern electric for 40 years and in his view, this wasnt in my job description as a salesman and that sorta time in the morning he called unsocial hours.
I'll certainly wanna know what my exact rate of pay for that time will be tho.

Re: I work for Currys-need help with job description law
I'd also say it depends on the company itself. If it's a crap job or that they don't treat the staff well and have terrible conditions then I'd be a stickler to the rules and reg and terms of the contract to the letter.
But if they treat the staff well etc then the opposite applies, that's life all over really.
