Dilemma
Ok guys I need a bit of advice here, I've got 2 job offers of the 2 I don't know which one to take, one is for a finance company based in Yorkshire and the other one is with Stagecoach East Midlands.
Job 1 is an accounts manager with a well known finance company, salary £17,500 a year OTE £24,000 plus company car, company phone, health care, pension, they also run competitions between employees for the chance to win a new car, flat screen TV's, free holidays etc etc, the prospects of promotion are good within the company.
Job 2 is a Trainee bus driver with Stagecoach East Midlands, wages are £6.10while traininig then £7.50 when you've passed your PCV licence, after one years service wages will be £8.50 an hour. You only get 2 chances to pass your PCV test if you fail it's goodbye. The perks with Stagecoach are, final salary pension which starts after one years service, NVQ in transport and travel etc etc.
I know it might sound dumb but I'm stuck as to which one to take.

Re: Dilemma
If it were me, i'd go for job No1. I can't stand driving at the best of times. So to have a job that involves driving, oh and rude people, would be a bad mistake.
Good luck with whatever job you decide to go for though Nidge.

Re: Dilemma
Assuming a 40 hour week for the Stagecoach job, there's not much in it for basic salary. There are the perks for the account manager, but don't forget you'll be taxed on the company car.
Company car tax calculator here...

Re: Dilemma
I would say Job no 1 as well but really it all depend on what you would actually enjoy.

Re: Dilemma
Driving the bus pays less, and as far as I can see, has fewer prospects. If you go for the accounts manager job, there is a whole world of extra responsibility for you to aspire to, get promoted to, and get paid for ...

Company cars can still be well worth having, if you do a decent amount of private mileage in them. Especially with the current cost of petrol. Just make sure you check out the CO2 rating for the cars on the approved list, and go for one that's as economical as possible, as company car tax is levied on pollution rather than mileage these days.

I reckon the job with Stagecoach will be in exess of 40 hours a week, you don't get paid for breaks or anything like that.

There's still the issue of prospects for promotion with the Stagecoach job though ...
On the car, all of the 1.7 Astras are taxed at 18% of list price. The list price is £16,215-£18,200 depending on which model they give you.

Job prospects are hard with Stagecoach though, before all this I have to pass my PCV while I'm doing that I'll only be on £6.10 an hour. After training I'll only be on £7.??? for a year.

Assuming it's a mid range one worth about £17k then tax will be ~£600 for the car plus another £600 if they pay for your private fuel...

And if he does 12,000 miles a year, at current prices he'll be spending at least £1,500 on fuel, if not considerably more. Plus the usual maintenance and insurance costs. It's still a deal well worth having if you can get it. I'd go so far as to say the job with the car is worth it for the car alone.

It's a bottom of the range with no aircon just the basic bog standard to start with then as I posted you work your way up the company with promotion you get a better motor plus a pay rise etc etc.

Re: Dilemma
Nidge I think the question you should be asking yourself is which job would you enjoy doing the most?
There is no point being in a job you find boring and uninteresting just for a wage packet and expenses.
Also the fact you are asking us makes me wonder if you really want either job?If the answer is no then I think you should choose the more interesting(to you) and give it a go and in the meantime keep a look out for a job you would REALLY like to do.

About £30 less on the car tax then. Still worth having, as Chris says...

The reason I'm asking is this, a few months ago I helped a mate of mine catch a burgler, the burgler went to the police to complain, me and my mate got arrested and interviewd, the police are wating for some papers to come back from the forensic finger printing department before deciding to send the case to the CPS. I can't affrod to hang about because I have to disclose any pending prosecutions this will lead to me losing my job. Hence the reason why I've had to look for other employment.
It's not a case of not wanting either of the jobs.

Then decide on the one you will enjoy doing.
I hope you have sought some advice from a solicitor or the CAB about the possible case in the mean time?
