Re: Dilemma

Given the current financial climate, I would have thought a job in finance would be a bit of a risk. I used to drive for a fruit merchant, the only consolation when you where stuck in traffic was that you were at work and being paid for sitting there.

Re: Dilemma

Nidge mate, bottom line.

Don't take the Stagecoach job.

I work for another bus company and I am fully aware of the pressures Stagecoach place on drivers.

You would have virtualy no chance of promotion and you would not be happy.

Take the other job and give it a good go, because I can promise you the Stagecoach job will still be there as a back-up.

The churn of driving staff is at mind boggling figures.

I know what you mean Delta, this company is a massive concern all over the UK and is posting record pre tax profits for the first 6 months of this year next week.

Job 1 is an accounts manager with a well known finance company, salary £17,500 a year OTE £24,000 plus company car, company phone, health care, pension, they also run competitions between employees for the chance to win a new car, flat screen TV's, free holidays etc etc, the prospects of promotion are good within the company.

Job 2 is a Trainee bus driver with Stagecoach East Midlands, wages are £6.10while traininig then £7.50 when you've passed your PCV licence, after one years service wages will be £8.50 an hour. You only get 2 chances to pass your PCV test if you fail it's goodbye. The perks with Stagecoach are, final salary pension which starts after one years service, NVQ in transport and travel etc etc.

I know it might sound dumb but I'm stuck as to which one to take.
dont even scratch your head over it nidge,job1 definitley,job2 will involve split shifts and unsocial hours plus a heart attack further down the line.

Re: Dilemma

I have heard bad things second hand about Stagecoach and the pressures they put on drivers. An example is one route takes 12 minutes under normal driving conditions with not much traffic, and they expect it to always take 12 minutes, regardless of the weather or amount of traffic.

I don't work as a bus driver, but if ever I was to look for a different line of work, bus driving would not be it due to the pressures I have heard about.

Re: Dilemma

As someone that doesn't drive and uses Mansfield Stagecoach buses every single day, i'd say go for job no 1. Stagecoach have got a huge staff turnover, huge staff dissatisfaction, high breakdown rates of vehicles, they are famous for running busses that are on the verge of legality and drivability(taken straight from the drivers). They regularly have big sections of the fleet taken of the road on the orders of VOSA. Also as previously stated, there is huge preasure from the company and customers alike, if there's road works or an accident, you can't use it as an excuse for being late, Stagecoach bosses are in cloud cuckoo land.

I certainly think it could be your best prospect...I think that having the chance to train upwards will be more interesting.Besides which bus drivers take far too much flack from some of the public as well as from other road users.

The stagecaoch ethos is if a manager fails to dismiss a 'core' driver (one on top pay rates and conditions) then they themselves are gone.
This put pressure on everyone below them.
If you go into most Stagecoach garages the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired because of the low moral.

This all leads to staff churn rates of 35 - 50% per year

You sure about that, considering you are legally required to take breaks, it'd be pretty harsh of them not to pay you for them
