Scotland
Recommendations for a good area of Scotland to visit for a week. We would like fun, some beach time, places of interest & scenery to photograph. Children age 12 & 9.
Please be mindful we will have to drive from south of the Midlands so not too much driving once we are there.
Thanks folks

Could name a few places. Ayr, Maybole & Dunure to name a few. All on the west coast of Scotland and you can even get a ferry to the isle of Arran. Also, not far from Ayr is Culzean Castle
This may be of some help too!

Re: Scotland
I'm off to Scotland next year (Feb) in a log cabin for a week on Loch Lomond, hoping for snow or the worse weather possible. I can't wait, never been but always wanted to, so took the plunge. Staying here in the glenfinnan lodge.
Sorry that doesn't help you much as I can't for the life of me put Scotland and beach together, more like brolly and hiking boots etc, haha.
But whatever, pick the scenic parts, around Ben Nevis etc so I've heard for the best of what's on offer. Hopefully others can give you/me better advice.

Loch Lomond is about 1-2hrs drive away from Ayr and the west coast.
Loch Lomond is beautiful and is right on my door step. A brilliant place to visit at any time of year.

Re: Scotland
The wife & I went to Loch Lomond last year, stayed in Helensborough.
Very nice, lots to see, very picturesque Definitely recommend it
Awful weather, though
Like peanutkp, "beach" & "Scotland" don't really fit together for me.

Re: Scotland
Being married to a Scot, she has suggested Loch Lomond, it is gorgeous, and l can remember, we went to Loch Ness, and got a chalet park, ON Loch Ness, at Fort Augustus, where Nessie has been seen, there is only one problem though RAF jets use the Loch at about 7-00am, the actual Church which has been seen in the films and where the sighting of Nessie, is there, Scotland is one of the best places l have seen, and the Scots are lovelly people, and l am not saying that, as l am married to one, l actually, proposed to my wife in a place called Campsie Glenn, and l have been married 30 years, it is a lovelly place to go to, and yes Nessie does exist, just have a couple of drams, and it floats across your eyes, it likes dougnuts, no you go and enjoy yourself.

Re: Scotland
Either the West of Scotland as you have plenty of places nearby or the North East around Cullen/Lossiemouth area.
The NE is a bit further to drive but has some absolutely stunning scenery and beaches you would actually think about going into.

Re: Scotland
'Beach' & Central Scotland can work, also - Loch Morlich is one example - in fact I would thoroughly recommend the Cairngorm National Park as a place to visit - activities available are walking, bike riding, fishing, clay pigeon shooting, sailing & canoeing, off road driving, an RSPB site with Ospreys, the funicular railway, a steam railway with an fine whiskey selection in the bar on the train, the 'Landmark Centre' which the kids will like etc, etc
Also only about 30 miles from Inverness & the Caledonian Canal trip to Loch Ness or other boat trips

Re: Scotland
Largs is a pretty nice place good wee seaside town. Was there a few weeks back and took this photo which I think came out great.
Taken with my Panasonic FZ-50.

Re: Scotland
The missus and I are big fans of Oban. Wonderful place but does end up working out a tad expensive. The accomodation isn't too bad though. A 4-posted bed room and full english breakfast for £65/night. I'll try and post my panoramic picture to show you the breathtaking views.
The only trouble is its more of a harbour than a beach. There is a cobbly bit which you can probably call a beach but not really usable as such (unless you're Chris W )

Re: Scotland
Being a resident in God's own country I'd agree that beach and large chunks of Scotland aren't that necessarily a match made in heaven. Percentage says East coast, isles and North. Pedometer says West Coast. I had the unfortunate experience of having the reasons explained to me during a round of golf by a geologist. Golf can be a tedious sport when you're in the wrong company..

Re: Scotland
This may well help:

Can't say I've visited many places in Scotland yet but one I'd certainly like to go back to is the Ardnamurchan peninsula. It's pretty with great beaches. There's the most westerly point of mainland Britain, a huge lighthouse that you can access and, only a boat trip away, is the pretty fishing port of Tobermorey - or Ballymorey.
Do remember that, once you are away from the main roads, driving anywhere can take an incredibly long time. With twisty, bumpy, narrow roads sometimes 20 MPH can sometimes seem fast!
Oh yes, and my picture of Largs:

Very nice. My photo was taken further along walking back to Largs along the beach front path
