Outside Light
Evening,
Our outside light has a sensor on it that detects movement and switches on. We have a switch inside the house which has two positions - on permanent and on - detection.
On the bottom of the light are two dials - one has a picture of a sun and moon and reset - the other is marked up as time.
During dusk and night time the light keeps switching on and off - as if movement is detected but there is none.
Some of the houses along our road have the same light and also some of them exhibit the same fault - any ideas what could be cause them to switch on?

Re: Outside Light
As they detect Infra-Red radiation (heat) it could be them detecting objects cooling down maybe?

Re: Outside Light
Sounds to me like your missing a dial for sensitivity or what you have is in fact a nightlight can you give themake and model ?

There's no make or model identifiable on it unfortunately.
Edit - The two dials are marked "Lite" and "Time".

Re: Outside Light
Could it be due to fluctuations in the power supply?

No idea!!!
It's a bit odd that some of the other are like it...we've ended up taking the bulbs outs, but you can still hear the detector "clicking"...

I would guess the 'Lite' dial determines when it decides it's dark enough to activate / light enough to deactivate & the 'Time' dial determines the length of time it stays on when it detects 'movement'. They can be quite sensitive & react to small mammals as well as humans. Any cats around, yours or neighbours?

Re: Outside Light
put some masking tape or insulation tape over the sensor and see if it still comes on and off. If it doesnt then mask it up so it only picks up the areas where you want it to detect movement.
We have one and it kept coming on everytime to boiler lit. It was picking up the heat from the boiler exhaust that was along the same wall. I masked that side up and then found it was picking up a hnaging basket on the other side. Finally i masked the sides and its fine now. Containined in the box was a PIR sheild that i just cut to size

Re: Outside Light
Some motion sensors have a wide field and are overly sensitive. My sister has a light like yours and is ready to swear it reacts to moths.

Check if it flashes on when the vent is exhausting, or just stick some tape on the PIR so that it cant see the vent as a test
