The falling man from the twin towers was quite powerful. Or any of the shots where the plane is about to smash into the towers.
I don't have a good memory at the best of times but seeing any single picture from 9/11 and it feels just like it was yesterday.

The people of Berlin pulling apart the Berlin Wall in 1989. I had so many hopes for the future that day.

Thankfully China has significantly improved its human rights record since then
The fall of the Wall - remember the TV pictures of people on top of it, hacking away.

The picture of the monk who set himself on fire in protest over the South Vietnam governments anti Buddhist policies, I remember seeing this as a youngster and its stayed with me ever since.

I was taught about both of these when I was at school. Both of these images are very powerful indeed.

Re: Most powerful image of the 20thC??
I think the very first images of the Earth seen from space have made the most impact. It made us realise how beautiful she is and how small we are in the universe.
Then all the voyager photos of the rest of the solar system have been pretty impressive too.
But I think it's very difficult to pick out one particular image. All the ones suggested so far are iconic and typify the 20thC.

The one you mentioned coggy, of a complete photo of the Earth from space, apparently even today there are less than five separate images of the complete Earth in shot. I suppose its because you have to travel so far out to get the shot, either way as you say that particular shot portrays the Earth as such a fragile oasis in the vastness of space, surely among the most important photographs ever taken.
