TomTom Map update at a cost.

Have had a email saying new Uk map is available to update .......for a price .??
Would have thought they would be for free as they are a part of the unit you have purchased . So what happens if you bought yours a couple of weeks ago do you have to pay again to get it updated.

Re: TomTom Map update at a cost.

You paid for a unit and a map, yes? Or did you pay for further updates?
They can't help it if (admittedly inevitably) the Highways Agency build a new road! Can they afford to give away new maps every time? Probably, but they probably won't either.
I'd say a nice idea wouldbe that an existing TomTom owner should be able to buy updated maps at a cut down price for 12 months - can you?
Other than that, roads don't change that much that it'll make a whole load of difference.
I'm using a 2006 map - never had any probs.
Wouldn't worry about it.

Re: TomTom Map update at a cost.

Do Microsoft give you the current version of Office or Windows, simply because you have bought an earlier version, no. Realistically you can subscribe to an update programme at a cost, or you wait a couple of years till the maps are too out of date, then do the throw away society non green thing, and buy a replacement sat nav. Of course the third option, is to get your sat nav nicked from your car, then you can get the current unit replacement on your insurance!

It all depends on what you use your sat nav for as to how current you need it to be. For me I can visit quite a few newish properties on new housing estates. Current maps are essential. It's also quite odd too trying to navigate a new road layout. Last time I went down the A30 towards Cornwall there was a major bypass. The poor thing got brainache as we drove across what it thought were fields and at every little old farm track it was convinced we should be turning left or right

It's funny now you mention it....my first reaction to reading your post was that it seems a little unfair that an almost brand new unit can be updated at a price.

Then I thought that if I bought a paper map and the next week I saw a newer one had replaced it, I wouldn't ask the mapping company to send me the updated pages to replace the out of date ones.

But I'm still on the fence on this one - I think with software, when it's not something tangible like actual printed pages, we do seem to expect updates and upgrades, or at least I do a bit...within reason.

So I think, on balance, given it's only two weeks old...I'd send an email to TomTom asking them to send the update free of charge or you'll be taking the unit back for a refund and getting a Garmin!

I'm not saying it's the right thing to do...but it's worth asking isn't it? You never know, they might just send it to you!

Re: TomTom Map update at a cost.

Many of the Tom Tom products are sold with a 30 day free upgrade ability so you can make sure you have the latest maps if it's been stuck on a shelf somewhere.

My Tom Tom is now a year old. Software patches and the like just updated for free. It's only things like maps and speed cameras that you have to pay for.

The unit I have is about a year old ,when I asked the question about one being a few weeks old I was using it as a example.

Re: TomTom Map update at a cost.

In that case I think I'd say you'd got a reasonable use out of it before the new map became available, so you should pay for it if you want it updating.

Of course you do have the option of not updating it....it will still work, just be missing the one new road this government might have thought about building this year!

Re: TomTom Map update at a cost.

I wouldnt bother upgrading. Chances are nothing much has changed and even if using older maps and you come across a slightly altered situation, you will no doubt be able to work round it in practice.

Re: TomTom Map update at a cost.

I agree the price is a little steep but its worth it in my oppinion. On that point, I have noticed that the TOMTOM update server is down again. How annoying! Always happens on a weekend lol.

Re: TomTom Map update at a cost.

You should have bought a Garmin mate. Their updates are free for 1 year from the point when you first register your product.

Re: TomTom Map update at a cost.

BEWARE got a nice email from tom tom saying £7.95 per quarter to get updated maps for the next year. this is not exactly the case as first you must buy the current map at £39.95 and then it lets you update at £19.90 for my tom tom one 3rd edition. £60 for new maps is crazy, i would have bought a new unit for £78 with mapshare which i believe is free. if they advertise approx £25 then approx £25 it should be, not the £60 i have just laid out. their customer service said its all in the small print, probably is!! but who reads that, i wanted updated maps for £25 and feel thoroughly robbed!!!!!!! you dont know you have bought the wrong thing till its finished downloading, and even now the new map is out of date for the route i took today along the a2 (opened approx 2 months ago)
