Recycling CD's?

Morning,

Bank holiday weekend so I'm doing a bit of spring clean.

Over the years I've acquired a load of mag cover mount CDs which are now next to useless - can I throw these in the plastics recycling bin?

Cheers

Lee

Re: Recycling CD's?

No.

They're not totally made of plastic (there's metals and chemicals in there too) and it would probably not be the right kind of plastic that your local council would want to recycle anyway.

I had the same problem as you so I phoned my local recycleing and they said cannot be recycled just put them in the household waste.

Re: Recycling CD's?

Or use them as beer mats, stick them together and hang on your wall, use in your garden to frighten away birds from your flowers, etc.

I usually find that actually playing them is more effective at scaring away birds (and unwanted guests).

This is from the http://www.recyclethis.co.uk/ webby

http://www.recyclethis.co.uk/2006092...ycle-cd-covers
`A good way to keep them out of landfill is to send them to a company that recycles them (and has recently won an Environmental Business of the Year award) although you do have to pay postage. They recycle both the jewel case and the disc itself. The case is made into a high quality polystyrene pellet that can be used in making new packaging, insulation foam or artificial wood, and the disc is made into a polycarbonate that has a number of uses, including as part of alarm boxes and motorway traffic lenses.
The company is Polymer Reprocessors Ltd, Peninsula Business Park, Reeds Lane, Moreton, Wirral, Cheshire CH46 1DW. I’m not connected with them, but I have just discovered them and am about to send all my old CDs off to them!'

Indeed it does...

Not sure if I can bother sending a few CD's to them though - total is about 30 or so...

Re: Recycling CD's?

I use drawing pins to attach them to a sheet of board, laid out like shingling, mirror side out. This acts as a useful sunlight reflector in my vertical coldframe, so that the plants get a maximum ammount of light on both sides.
