Moans About Job Wages
Okay, I have just found out that a collegue of mine who has been with the company less than 2yrs and who is making an awful lot of mistakes etc etc and is doing the exact same job as me but is 2yrs younger.
I know he does the same job as i sit directly infront of him and i am on his team, am also his friend.
Anyway, we have just had our annual pay reviewed and unfortunately none of us have had a pay rise but i have just found of my collegue/friend is on £2800 more than me?
How can this be?
I have been with the company 8yrs and done so much more, achieved more about the job etc etc and be cut out of the higher wage?
This has really annoyed me.

Re: Moans About Job Wages
A manager's job is to give you as little money as possible, to keep you happy - sadly you don't get rewarded for good work, you get rewarded for complaining - so next pay review you need to say you're not really happy with what they offer you.

Re: Moans About Job Wages
Been at my current level within the organisation I work for over 4 years now, work with 3 people (some much younger than me) that have been at that level about a year, we're all on exactly the same money (down to the penny).
The message behind this anecdote?
Stuff happens.

Re: Moans About Job Wages
Quite likely he's been to the manager and asked for more money.
I'm self employed now but I did used to work in a company where pretty much everyone was on an even level in terms of what they did and what they were paid etc despite some being with the company for a long, long time - but I know I was on more than some simply because come the time of year of the pay reviews, I said I'd like more than they were offering. They obliged, but that didn't mean they had to go and tell everyone else that they could have that too if they wanted?
I suggest you go and state your case - nothing to lose?
:edit: Probably naughty I know, but when I left I gave the same advice to my colleagues..

Well I know somebody whose taken over the job from somebody who themself has been promoted.
He's been offered £4,500 less for the position than original job holder.

I wonder if my really lovely and amazing boss would like to give me a pay rise.

Re: Moans About Job Wages
You need to be careful there is no policy covering discussion of salaries between colleagues. I know in our NHS trust it can be disciplinary if you've got an a**e of a manager.
But i would state my case if i felt i was being underpaid - you never know your luck I've tried many times to no avail, hence me looking for a new job

Re: Moans About Job Wages
Fairly similar thing happened to me a few years back now when I was with my 1st company.
We'd taken on this girl as a tech just for the summer, while she was in between years at University (so no degree, obviously). She'd worked for us previously as a temp. tech. the previous year, while at college.
Found out she was being paid slightly more than me & one of the other techs, and the same as another who was on slightly more than me...Despite the three of us being Graduates, & despite us being full time permanent employees who'd been there a couple of years.
I kicked up a fuss...Politely.
End result, they finally realised (or reluctantly admitted) that the three of us were being paid sweet FA compared to "the industry average", & we got quite nice pay raises at the next review.
People pay what they think they can get away with.
At my current place, one of my workmates used to be on a few grand less than me, despite being the same age & doing exactly the same job, simply because when he joined the year after me, they got away with offering him ever so slightly more than the crappy wage his last place paid him.

Re: Moans About Job Wages
same thing happened where I used to work. my old shift partner got twice as much in their rise as I did and we were on the same team, doing the same work every shift. he did no more than I and I no more than him. another person in the team was off on long term sick for 6 months and got 3 times as much as the rest of the team. When we had positions free in the team, 2 people were recruited externally and started on 6k more than anyone else in the team. When I confronted my boss about why this was, I was told that when he offered anything less, no one would even come through the door. Upon my asking if the company therefore recognised they were well underpaying us, I was told that yes, this was the case, but the fact the team came into work everyday meant we were apparently willing to accept that. since then, the team has less than halved as we've all got jobs elsewhere... on MUCH better pay....

Pretty much always the way, isn't it? When I left this place 3½ years ago, I was on awful money. In my exit interview, my manager at the time asked what salary was going to be with my new employer, so I told her (after adding a little on, anyway ). She just looked at me and said that the company couldn't match it (and trust me, my salary was rubbish)... So off I went.
When this job came up at the tail end of last year, as a result of 3 pay rises with my former company, I've ended up with a salary that's twice what I was on when I left...
Unfortunately, you do tend to find that, if you're willing to stay at a company, they do rather hold the advantage - if you're prepared to leave and maybe come back at a later date, you'll often find that the package is much better

Tis true, people spend far to much time worrying about what others are doing and getting although it is easy to understand peoples frustration and easy to see how people can be left feeling under valued especially if the person earning more isn't very good at their job

Loyalty has always been a flaw with me rather than a plus, people take advantage if you let them and you can get into a rut

Simple.
You've not been given pay rises in line with the industry standard for your sector.
Therefore two years ago your salary was £2800 below the standard.
This is why if you want a decent pay rise, you need to change jobs.
The irony being that they'll probably pay your replacement the amount that you were after.

Re: Moans About Job Wages
I was offered another job on £6k more than I am on now, and my current employer matched it.
It seems to be the only way to get a bigger than inflation rise to what you think you should be on. I think its par for the course that newer people will always join on more than you joined.
