Re: Happy St George's day...

In my opinion todays the day we remember and celebrate past English heros, among them the 17th Lancers, which was one of the regiments that took part in the famous Charge of the Light Brigade, this holds a certain significance for me because my great, great, great, great uncle took part in and survived the charge.

Cannon to the right of them,
Cannon to the left of them,
Cannon in front of them, vollyed and thundered,
stormed at with shot and shell, bravely they rode, and well,
into the jaws of death, into the mouth of hell, rode the 600.

courtesy of Lord Tennyson.

Does there need to be that much of a point? St. Patrick's day is just an excuse for a massive **** up isn't it? So is the Dutch national day which is usually on the birthday of the reigning monarch (The present Queen decided to stick to her mother's birthday as it is in a better season, weather wise).
There's some formal stuff to the day, like the Queen visiting places and interacting with the public. Other than that, it's just a day of festivities. Loads of entertainment is laid on for children, city centres are transformed into massive car boot sales, many people dress in orange, bakers will sell orange pastry etc., there's live gigs and people get ****ed (in a generally laid back atmosphere). It's a massive party. Who cares about a reason when you can have a nationwide party?

Not me

I think all the Patron Saint days of the UK's home nations should be public holidays, for each particular country.

Especially as, AFAIK, N. Ireland already has Saint Patrick's Day as a public holiday.

Oh, also saw on the news that Saint George's Cross was flown above no.10 Downing Street on Wednesday for the first time on a Saint George's Day. The Welsh & Scottish flags are also going to be flown above no.10 on their respective days.

I think that's just "people pleasing", remember, there are elections just around the corner.
