Leaving everything to the last minute...... Lost my bloody driving license ages ago and didnt bother replacing it. FLying on holiday next week - new license wont come through on time, so hiring a car will be a hassle.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates Part 5.
I've locked horns with a Senior Manager at work. It could get ugly Seriously pis... annoyed at the management. We have a shift allowance for those who work the late shift. I keep a record of days worked and submit the figures to the department manager the first week of the month, for the previous month. He's on holiday so I sent the figures to the Team Leaders. No response after a few days. So I asked my Team Leader and he basically didn't give a toss. He didn't want to sort out submitting the figures to payroll for fear of making a mistake and ending up with "egg all over his face". I spoke to another Team Leader and she could only promise to talk to the department manager when he comes back on Monday, which may or may not be too late to submit the figures. So I told the guys not to expect the shift allowance, and emailed the department manager and senior manager advising them of this. Senior manager is asking why I have done this. I have replied that the company's organisation is crap, hence.

I know exactly how you feel - it's frustrating how many companies don't care if they screw up your pay packet on the assumption that they can sort it out a month or 2 later
Er hello!!! What about this month!!!

Whilst I understand your frustration, probably not the best approach to take, as the Department Manager should have delegated the authorisation to someone else whilst he was on holiday (so, the organisation may not be crap, just him).
Have you tried talking to HR and find out who else could authorise it? - someone on the equivalent level may be able to.
I make sure that if my direct reports are on holiday, some else can authorise overtime/timesheets (sometimes it has to be me, and as I have over 170 staff, it can be a pain). Pay and holidays are sacrosanct in my book, especially overtime.

Good luck with the move, I'm sure you will feel fine with the move once you have settled in. Just remember all the bad times you are leaving behind and think of all the good times to come.... and of course we won't miss you....much....well maybe a little bit.

You're a manager, aren't you Sound just like one. I don't know what it is. The job changes a manager - his cognitive processes. His integrity disappears in favour of a more fluid approach. A slow process.
Department Manager couldn't organise the proverbial in a brewery - and everyone knows it and does nothing. The Senior Manager is a slimely ***** who got to the top by kissing ass - much like my Team Leader. "Apathy" is the keyword.
Oh and we're not allowed to talk to people outside the department - big no-no.

If by that you mean a Manager has to think about more than his/her own little area of responsibility, and therefore can't make snap judgements because they may affect other areas, so needs to discuss things and agree a way forward with those other areas, which can, unfortunately, take time - yes, being a manager does change things.
According to some "shop-floor" staff, managers are lazy, idle stupid blockages - we must be really carp managers then, as I usually do 50-55 hour weeks (and no, I don't get overtime).
Things aren't always right/wrong, even though it may seem that way to the people affected (and it is always simpler and more self-satisfying to blame someone for something, rather than try and understand any complexities that may need to be resolved, doesn't it? ).
If where you work is so hide-bound and oppressive, why are you still there? No company I have ever worked for has had any issues with people talking to HR about issues (it is what they are there for, after all).
Anyway, good luck in getting the pay/overtime problem resolved.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates Part 5.
I think GC maybe has certain bosses who resent anyone going outside perceived protocols because it's their protocols they have established by practice rather than by discussion with anyone..
I'm sure foreverwar isn't that sort of boss at all and doesn't get annoyed if people find a way to sort out a situation he hasn't forseen and isn't around to give an answer for/to.
Now you can both be peeved at me instead...
