I get there to be told that they've found a problem with her plumbing, and as a result poo is coming out of the front, rather than the back - and that she doesn't actually seem to have a bottom-hole - it just seems fused shut. As a result, she's going to need an op - she also has a heart murmur, but apparently this happens alot with prems, and tends to clear up - and they're trying to get her a bed at Great Ormand Street.
My sister is obviously upset - this is worsened by the fact that her other half is out in Saudi at the moment, as a bodyguard - he was coming back but couldn't get a flight straightaway.
So I drive her back to her house, so she can get clothes for several days, since they let parents stay at GOSH.
I then drive her back to the hospital - by now it's about 3pm-ish - and we're told that they're trying to arrange for the ambulance to come and get the baby - but - they won't take her with them - so I say I'll drive her down to GOSH when the ambulance comes.
Ambulance eventually comes at close to midnight - all of which time we've just been sitting around the hospital.
So I drive her down there, it's close to 1 by the time I get there, and once they're settled in and she's got her room and is about to go to sleep it's going on 1.45.
I then have to drive home from there which is another 50 odd minute drive, so I don't get back until gone 2.30.
So, all in all, although I feel like I've had a lousy day, it's dwarfed by what my sister is going through.
We then find out this morning that the baby has 2 holes in her heart, and will require an operation for that as well.
Baby has had an op today for the plumbing problem, and currently has a colostomy bag, and will carry on with that for the foreseeable future until she is bigger for the re constructive work she will need.
It just makes me so sad to see, and knowing that we're not that far from having a baby, really makes it hit home just how fragile these things are.

Sounds like an awful weekend Mr L_M, what is your new nieces name? I know its little comfort atm, but all the problems are treatable - i suppose these are the areas which are still developing in the last few weeks
I wish you all well and I'm sure she will be just fine, even though it might take a while. I think we all take life a little too for granted sometimes and need to take a look around at what's going on elsewhere

Re: Moans and Pet Hates Part 5.
Sorry to hear this LM.Is there anyone else in the family to sit with your sister? Can her husband come back on compassionate leave? It looks like you are going to have a very busy time for the next few weeks otherwise.
My regards to your family and just this once I'll try the value of a prayer.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates Part 5.
Thanks all for your words.
Her other half will be back Tuesday am - and until then we're all taking it in turns to sit with her - I'm going to go there today after work, and various other family members will be there during the day.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates Part 5.
So sorry to hear that Mr LM, not a good start in this world, and very distressing for all concerned. It is truly amazing what they can do nowadays, and I'm sure every attempt will be made by the surgeons, to enable her to lead as normal a life as possible. Keeping my fingers and everything else crossed for her.

Well, to be honest I'm not sure how many of her (surgical) problems are due to her being prem - speaking to the consultant Saturday night/Sunday morning - he was saying that the issue with her plumbing is just 'one of those things' - it's nothing to do with her being prem - something like 1 in 2500 babies have it - though it's possible that because something was wrong that's why she came early.
As for the heart, maybe I was just reading it wrong, it was late, and neither of us was firing on all cylinders - but the consultant seemed surprised that the heart issues (which we later found out to be holes) hadn't been picked up sooner in the antenatal scans, since he was able to hear the murmurs just by listening to the heart.
But as I say, I could be wrong.
I'm just glad she's at GOSH, it's the best place for her, and it's easier for the majority of people to visit as well, so hopefully she won't be on her own that much

Mum is a foster carer and once looked after a little girl who was born with all her organs on the outside of her body, she underwent major operations to get everything where it should be, but made an impressive recovery
I'm suprised things weren't picked up sooner with Ellie (as you say), i have a small heart problem which was only detectable through a murmur and was missed on birth - but then again that was 30 years ago and i'd hope things might be better now
Is she in a good hospital then Mr L_M?? (i assume this is a different one to the mat unit she was born in?)

Re: Moans and Pet Hates Part 5.
Will keep my fingers crossed here too.
It is amazing what they can do these days, but that doesn't stop you worrying. Sounds like they are in the best place they can be now and should be getting great care. Keep us all updated.

Indeed GOSH were most helpful and good when I've been there in the past.
