Re: Tax refund incorrect number

Well would you want me calling them up with your NI number and some other phished information and telling them to send the funds to my bank account instead?
Seems to make sense that they want it in writing.

I would imagine that you could ask them to send a cheque to the address on the return instead.

Thanks............totally understand but what about the payment already made that's my main concern. Would it have simply gone into an incorrect account. Or would the payment i think by BAC include my name and thus would the bank have 'bounced' it and returned the payment ???

Thats my big question

Re: Tax refund incorrect number

They should retrieve it from the other bank account as an incorrect BACS payment, that even assumes that the bank account number you wrote down exists. If it does not in about a week the recipient bank will return it.
Did you get the sort code right? You could contact your branch if you did and see if they have the money there etc.

So does a BACS payment state a name as the account number was just a couple of numbers out so I guess the account exists (sort code was correct)

Re: Tax refund incorrect number

It is not a key matching criteria unless there is an error. Basically if the sort code and account number exist the payment will end up in that account, otherwise banks would have a nightmare, say the account is Mr John J Doe and the payment was sent to JJ Doe would that is not a match and the payment would reject.
Now if the payment is later queried like in this instance and the beneficiary says JJ Doe and the account Mrs Wilma Smith then they can see the obvious problem in the payment.

There is an option on the SA form to have refunds sent by BACS and underpayments taken by DD, the OP selected it.
