Re: anybody else out there ?
I think there must be something else out there, there cannot just be us floating around in "space".

Cable Forum even has it's own, albeit not very active, seti team. More info in this article, and this thread.

How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

Re: anybody else out there ?
perhaps we're in some galatic zoo being observed by aliens.
Fermi had some interesting thoughts on the subject.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox
I read a book by Stephen Baxter a while ago, and his theory was that we were actually in some sort of simulated reality, but this can only last for so long, because the power/memory needed to simulate a reality would be too much for any power source/technology, since as humans develop new tools for viewing more of the universe, you have to 'properly' simulate more of the universe all of the time - so if you were to do something, like bouncing a laser beam of the nearest galaxy, as they did in the book, with the intention of it bouncing back to you - it would be possible that you overwhealm whatever device they are using to simulate your reality.
When they do this, and the beam doesn't come back, it becomes clear that they have broken the machinery that is running the simulation, and reality starts to collapse, with a 'reality wave' coming towards the earth - and having no idea if this means the end of them, or the start of something else.
