Short Changed

I had an incident Friday night where I was short changed.

I popped to the pub and had £70 in my pocket 3 x £20 and 1 x £10, dont ask me why but I used the £20 to buy my first drink. I had 4 bottles at £2.50 each so I spent £10 total, so I now had 2 x £20 and 2 x £10 in my pocket. I had only had the 4 bottles and made my way home via the chinese takeaway.

I got in the takeaway and ordered a tray of food for £3.50 and handed over a £10 note. The girl gave me £1.50 change, I said 'Excuse me I gave you a £10 note' and she said 'No you didn't you gave me a fiver' I sat down to wait for my meal and checked my money, sure enough I could not account for £5 and the fact that I never had a £5 note when I left the pub (Couldn't of) only leaves one explanation.

The fact that I was sober and couldn't of possibly had a £5 note to be mistaken really annoyed me. On top of that the girl behind the counter was so insistant that is was a £5, as far as I am concerned she is accusing me of being a liar who was trying it on.

I am really annoyed about the principle of the matter, more than once in my local pub I have been given change for a £10 instead a £5 and for a £20 instead of a £10. This has happened 2 or 3 times and I have always been honest and corrected them.

I guess the bit that really annoys me is where money is concerned I am very honest, being ripped off for a fiver is not as important as someone now thinking I am dishonest. I have no idea if Perhaps she ripped me off on purpose, perhaps they often do that to drunks in there. I now have a dilemma, on one hand I dont want to go in that takeaway again and give them any further business but on the other I want to go in and bring the subject up with her but doing so I may not be very polite to them.

Start a petition for your local pub to start selling takeaway food.

Re: Short Changed

I would assume that it was a mistake, unless its happened to you in the same place before or you know someone that it has happened to in there.

I would in a nightclub and at least once a night, usually more people will claim that they have given me a £20 when they've given a £10 etc.

Normally i would take their details and when the till is cashed up, if it is £10 up then i would call them and i would give them the money back, that has only happened once in the 4 years ive worked there.

I'm surprised that she didnt do the same, as surely the till would do a read out at the end of the night to confirm how much money should be in it. Unless ofcorse she did it on purpose and wanted an extra fiver.

Do you know if it was her shop? or was she an employee?

Re: Short Changed

You could have asked for a till check, might take a little time (if they have a till) but it should show.

She is an employee chav type, it does make me wonder though if it was on purpose. I had not gone to the pub until late and was fairly tired, so I guess I could of looked like someone who had drunk a lot of alcohol.

I mentioned it on Saturday night to the landlady in my local to see if anyone else had said that about the place. She knows I wouldn't try it on myself and she knows I only had a few drinks. What's more the fact that it wouldn't of been possible for me to have a fiver in my pocket going into the chinese really confirms that I didn't make a mistake.

If I had drunk lots of beer I would of put it down to my mistake, perhaps thats what most of their customers do.

Re: Short Changed

Nowadays, whenever I hand over a note, I always say what it is. With the excuse "Sorry about the (£5, £10 or £20), but I havn't got the right money on me. That way, it alerts the person on the other side of the counter that you know exactly what you are handing over.

It also saves alot of embarrasment on both sides. As more than once I have been asked "Did you give me a £10 or a £20".
