Re: Funeral costs....?

Fourtunatly, I haven't had to worry about this before but I did find a useful linky form the ol' BBC

Cremation should cost around £200 to £300. These costs do not include elements such as funeral director's charges, transport and a coffin or cremation urn.

As with weddings I think it's pretty much the more you pay the fancier the occasion. I don't know the exact cost but these guys seem to have done some work on the issue.

Far too many variables to give you an accurate cost, have a look here:

My fathers burial cost £1200 eight years ago.

There's a company in Swansea who say they do a 'budget' funeral for £695.

My mum's funeral (4 years ago) was approx £1500, and it was nothing fancy.

Well before my dad died he purchased his funeral with the Co-op and paid up front. He chose his coffin (the cheapest one there ) and everything to do with the service etc. When he died things were made much easier by this.

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/22...er-page-2.html see post 20

A person at the co-op commented that often people do not know what thier loved ones would have wanted so end up getting the best coffin best handles etc etc often way above what they can afford or the person would have wanted.

My dad would have bought a cardboard box if they had one but they did not go that cheap !!!!

I miss him so much

Re: Funeral costs....?

Pre-pay is the way to go, my mum has already paid for hers, coffin, church stuff, cremation, burried in the family plot etc, I think the price was somewhere around the 2k mark IIRC which was paid for in 2004.

Re: Funeral costs....?

My mate's partner is having trouble. Her mum just isn't bothered, which you can understand - can't say that I'm that bothered about my send off. But a funeral is more for the living - final goodbye. And it's upsetting her - wants to give her mum a decent send off but her mum just says not to worry. And mentions cardboard coffins Mate's partner has no cash and is hoping her mum might have savings or insurance - but her mum isn't saying much on the subject. It's a difficult one. I know my grandad's funeral cost over £1000, and that cremations are supposedly cheaper. I'd never go to a cremation again - was too horrific for me.

Re: Funeral costs....?

I believe there is help with the costs from the DSS, if all relatives are without savings, & are on some form of benefit. It may be worth checking it out. I suspect an average funeral in the (my) Manchester area would be app £1300.00 to £2000.00

Re: Funeral costs....?

My Dad's funeral in October was a very basic affair and cost roughly £2500: church service, announcements, flowers, crematorium, funeral directors, church and organist fees etc.

My Sister's, in April, was pre-planned, and very lavish, and much more expensive due to personal requests of coffin, cars, and reception afterwards. That kind of thing.

A thought which may or not be be helpful - if the person paying for the funeral receives certain benefits:
http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/n6w/in...ocial_fund.htm may be useful - a quarter of the page down.

The problem with the DSS 'help' is that its means tested and also according to the guys that appear to have done some calculations around this area...

Quote:
From the client's point of view, the contribution from the DSS (where applicable) does not even cover the average price of a funeral.
At some point, I might have to look at prepaid. Both my wife and I want to be buried and as we don't have family plots or anything... I wonder if you can pay by installments? EDIT Yep you can

Re: Funeral costs....?

Sad to say if any direct relative happens to be married to someone who is working then you will get nothing out of Social Services (one brother was on the dole & one had no income at all & I was a stay at home mum & we got no help). My Mums funeral was as basic as we could get (she really wanted that cardboard box but I couldn't find one) and came out around £1,000 5 years ago. This included the Humanist Celebrant £90 and Crematoria £300. No cars or ushers and if you can the last service of the day at the crematoria is the least rushed/conveyor belt ish.

For all those who have lost someone close to them.

Re: Funeral costs....?

My initial enquiries suggest that it would be around the 2k mark. I was just checking really in case there was an unusually wide variation across different funeral directors.

With regard to cremations, the best thing to do with these is to see a local priest/minister etc and arrange for a joint "normal" day service and funeral service together. This avoids the sometimes unseemly and distressing rush at the crm, which so often happens.

Mike my dad was the same, he often said bury me on a golf course or on a fotball pitch, he didn't want anything fancy no fancy coffin, no fancy service. I'm like you I miss him so much he was the one I could have turned to in a crisis.
