Re: Forest wide web
Wow, that's pretty amazing, i'd never have thought spiders would work together, to capture food, if that's what they're doing this for.
Great idea which looks to have worked judging by the colour.

If you try to aim at a specific mossie, true. Spray the area, you're bound to get loads...

Re: Spiderfest
Jeez! What sort of prey do those spiders want - eagles or something?!
On a note less likely to freak out our arachnophobes (none of whom followed the link, surely ), imagine if those spiders could somehow be bred or taught to do that on demand, i.e. to produce spiderweb with specific properties and thickness.
Spiderweb, weight for weight, is stronger than the finest steel wire of the same cross-section. It could be of immense value to the construction industry - suspension bridges, for example, could be a lot cheaper and lighter than, but every bit as safe as, the equivalent using steel cables. The scenes in the Spider-Man trilogy aren't that far-fetched in terms of the tensile strength of spiderweb.
It could also be of use to the military, to create bulletproof uniforms - lighter than current issue, but having the stopping power of Kevlar without the extra bulk.
There have been efforts for decades to synthesise spiderweb, but I don't know how far anyone's got. Perhaps spiders could be gene-tweaked, or trained using chemicals or RNA.
And to our posters who by now are quaking in horror at the thought of actual spider farms: have you ever worn natural silk? As Terry Pratchett pointed out in Mort, that comes out of caterpillars' bottoms.
