If it tastes good then who cares. I used to be a butcher and I do find it funny how people see it as ok to eat a cow but then turn their nose up at the idea of dog or horse meat ,Its meat an animal died for it no matter what kinda beast I love meat but im only eating chicken breast however I treated myself to a steak yesterday first one in months mmmmmmmm lovely zebu or not hehehehehehe

I think it should be a legal requirement for these places to say where the meat comes from.

I do agree with that. I have a good business relationship with my butcher (I used to work with one guy who owns the shop and the other owner ive built and maintain his pc for) and all their beef is locally reared and I get it very cheap the chicken breasts I buy in bulk again for a very good price they do home shopping I can recommend their meat but its not cheap for regular joes Their pork pies are to die for by the way roll on christmas I can have one then lol

Re: Why your pub steak may not be as beefy as you think
I like to know where it's come from to find out the quality of the meat, and if it has had any bad reviews, hygiene regulations, any hormones added to the cows, etc.
It's like I would not board a plane without knowing the company I am flying with.
Some world airlines have very poor safety records that are not as tight as european regulations.

That Zebu looks like a bovine animal so I don't see a problem with it being classed as steak. I wouldn't have a problem eating it

the animal in the picture is a prime bull, from what I remember of 'humped' cattle in Kenya, they can be a bit more 'skinny' than he is
- which may explain the comments about the meat being tough, meat which is too lean can be less succulent than a nicely 'marbled' piece.

I tried "alpaca" in Peru.
Some sort of llama type thing.
Not bad.

So I guess you'd also be quite happy to eat yak, bison, buffalo or ox that were masquerading as steaks too then?
This is not really to do with whether something can legally be known as a steak, it's about a trust relationship between the retailer and the consumer. The vast majority of people assume (naively) that the retailers will look after their interests and select produce that is of the same standard that the consumer would buy themselves.
Clearly this is not happening in at least two major chains, but I feel that the whole programme last night failed to press any serious lines of questioning with Whetherspoons and Hungry Horse (is that a literal name BTW?!?!)

Re: Why your pub steak may not be as beefy as you think
If it's meat and it comes from a cow, it's beef to me! Most people don't normally worry what make of cow their steak comes from and those that do are probably prepared to pay more than a fiver for their steak.
I wonder if there would such an uproar if the zebu breed of cow came from France or Ireland?

A steak is a certain cut of meat from parts of an animal so by definition if its called rump steak(from the butt cheeks) t-bone steak(from the spine ) or fillet steak (from the inside of the spine)it only refers to the part of the animal its cut from.Admittingly these do normally refer to beef steaks but a rump steak from a yak is still his ass cheek
I would hapily eat steak from any of your listed animals as long as it was prepared and cooked properly. In fact I think Bison is actually quite nice
