Yeah thats why I made the concious decision to replace the belt on my car before I made any serious use of it (in fact the belt was relatively unworn - at least that's how it appeared, but the idle tensioners, etc were all worn out so had those replaced - it turned out well as the timing was well off so they sorted that at the same time)

The first thing I check on a car is the cambelt and when it was changed, if it was changed 30,000 miles ago I'll change it just to be on the safe side, some models will let you go 100,000 before your belt needs changing, the belt is being phased out and replaced by a chain which doesn't need changing. The best cars for not causing any damage when the belt snapped was the Vauxhall Cavalier, when the belt used to snap on them it didn't cause any damage.

Alfa 147, The absoloute git part is, it was getting new belts and tensioners in ten days time.
Instead it busts with me doing sixty mile an hour. in the wet, and losing power steering and abs in the process. Going backwards was the fun part

My 15 year old Motor has a timing chain, and a friend has a second hand Punto that was left with a mechanic friend of mine when the belt snapped & did all most no damage, the original owner would not believe that the engine was not ruined

Re: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh
I've heard that newer Fiat engines are made in such a way that the pistons don't smash id the cam belt goes.

Thats right Russ, when the belt snaps instead of the pistons coming to the top and smashing the valves the pistons drop and the valves go to the top meaning no damage, the old Ford Cortina engines used to do the same, I've replaced many at the side of the road when I was on the Taxis.
