Strange, anyone would think you had actually read the title before posting lol as to the answer it's the sort of "trick" my maths tutor used to throw at us and tell us to try and beat him.

Re: How does this work?
I believe the answer has to do with the following: Take any 4 digit number (that doesn't have many zeros), jumble the digits and subtract the smaller from the larger number. Now add the digits you have, and the sum is 18... You simply subtract the typed in numbers from 18 and you have your answer. For a 3 digit number, the sum is 9. This worked for a couple of numbers I tried.

Re: How does this work?
It's funny, they give the example of "if your answer is 5560" as in if you picked a 4 digit number and after mixing it you got a number 5560 different, then just enter 560, meaning you've ringed the number 5, it comes up with 7, so it gets it wrong, or it means you can't make a 4 digit combination with a difference of 5560 or it's combinations.
Even stranger, I just did:
4891 and 8419 giving a difference of 3528 (which added together does equal 18)
Ringed the 3, and entered 528, it then said the missing number was 1.
Worked the second time though.

Re: How does this work?
Whatever you do, you cannot put in a Zero. If you try the test you will see the number you chose if added to the numbers left will add to 9. if you have a 9 in your answer, it will ignore it.
Or. f(x) dx = lim (d -> 0) (k=1..n) f(X(k)) (x(k) - x(k-1))
Jim.
