We've got a bunch of newbies at work. Doing well - five due to start and we have only lost one. Probably another two will go during training, that will leave two. In three months we might have one left. They get an old chair with the foam gone on the seat (well flattened), mucky desk, phone (may crackle if you move suddenly), and a HP Vectra (PIII 512MB RAM) - but they will have to build the PC themselves. The XP disk has gone missing. Call me a sadist but I do love it when we have newbies

Re: The Happy Thought Thread - Part 2
Best. Work related. Moment. Ever.
Burglar gets caught inside house. Absolutely red-handed no ifs or buts.
Cuffed and in back of car. On the way to the station and amongst the insults, threats and general abuse he turns to me and says.
"I bet you love this. Why don't you get a proper job!"
Needless to say the person involved is a keen consumer of Afghanistans national product and isn't exactly known for his keen work ethic. Have to admit I was speechless for the rest of the journey.

It's the company - they don't value us at all. They have no concept or understanding of the social aspects of the work place, and how to make work something that people might enjoy doing. The furniture and equipment is old, and sometimes faulty, and the facilities are basic. A lot of newbies will have been sold a job by their agency that is completely different to the job they find themselves doing - so we tend to lose a few either during training or shortly afterwards. The training doesn't prepare them for the job - I don't think any training can. They get the core knowledge given to them, and after that, it's up to them to develop their knowledge and diagnostic skills further - this means they will be taking support calls without always knowing what their are doing. That's where I come in - nipping to the rescue Things have improved - when I started, I had to put my PC together from a pile of bits, and two monitors was a status symbol, not something you got by default.

2 Monitors is default here, the mouse and keyboard you get is a status symbol

Re: The Happy Thought Thread - Part 2
We give them a mouse and keyboard. May have to wipe the mouse and give the keyboard a bang - get the hair, dandruff, and so on out of it. I remember I found a fingernail clipping in my keyboard, back when I started. Happy days.
