One For The Radio Hams If We Have Any Here
I have a very old Realistic 200 Channel Programmable Scanner.
Model - 20-9506
Scanning Receiver Pro 26
Freq Range - 25-1300mhz
Power is via a 6v dc charger.
Question is, shows how much I use it is I am looking to replace the batteries, currently using Uniross RX6+ 1.2V 650mAH AA Size Ni Cd so looking for advice on what suitable alternatives I could use in the scanner or whether it would be cheaper to just buy a new scanner.
Thanks in advance.

Being slightly pedantic here, anyone who has an interest in scanners could answer this, not just radio hams

Are you using it in the house or do you plan to go mobile with it mate? If you chose the first option I'd just go for the plug it in at the wall and there you go, I'm not a big fan of batteries (reduced power). IMO go for the plug into the wall option.

Correct! but anyway if it makes carlingman feel any better, I am a Radio Ham
I would suggest Nickel Metal Hydride(NiMH) batteries, which are available in capacities upwards of 1800mAh, that'll give you loads more scanning time.
Only thing i'd like to ask(and it's slightly OT), is, what do you find to listen to, everthing in our area's gone digital, so other than Radio Hams, CB'ers, and 446Mhz walkie talkies, there's not much to listen to.
Oh, and just to add to Nidge's post, if your using it mobile in a car, get an adapter for your cigarette lighter socket.

thanks Russ but was going to ask a bolt on question but then realised it might not quite fit with the forums T&Cs so omitted it but forgot to amend the title.

Mobile mate hence why i needed the replacement batteries as the charger / adaptor is fine for home use but never used much in the house as there is not much on there other than police etc.

Thanks mate will have a look around for NiMH.
It is now mainly used for air shows as apparently you can listen in directly to pilot and tower convos so my girlfriends brother tells me who usually borrows it when he goes to these events but has noticed it is not holding the charge.

Re: One For The Radio Hams If We Have Any Here
Your girlfriend's brother is correct.
I go to both Waddington Airshow and The Royal International Air Tattoo at Fairford, you can indeed hear the conversation between the control tower and the pilot, also the display leader of the Red Arrows issueing his intructions, details of approaching aircraft that are approaching the display from other places etc.
I have an ICOM IC-R5 Scanner that runs on 2AA batteries. 2 NiMH AA's last me about the whole six to 7 hours of flying.
One thing you might want to do is to replace the aerial with one dedicated to the VHF/UHF(Civilian/Military) airband, the one thats will be on it at the moment will be a compromise.
