Why wait til July 1st
http://212.58.226.30/1/hi/health/6278475.stm
What a good idea......
Perhaps we could use this thread to post other initiatives rather than continuing the "smoking in the pub" debate?

Re: Why wait til July 1st
I expect the reason we haven't seen more of this is a "reluctance" by the big breweries that own most of the pubs.

Re: Why wait til July 1st
Punch Taverns, which have 9200 pubs, have been planning ahead.
Linky
"In the meantime, we have been preparing our entire estate, both leased and tenanted and managed for change for some considerable time and recognise they need to be implementing action plans now.
Each retailer has had a personal visit from their Business Relationship Manager, talking them through the potential impact and opportunities of a ban and they have each received a comprehensive smoking ban action plan brochure and DVD. We believe there is an effective smoking solution for each of our outlets (over 90% of our estate has an outside space) and we will be investing a further £10 million (excluding retailer investment) in smoking related solutions in addition to our ongoing £65 million investment programme.
In our managed house estate, Spirit has earmarked almost £8 million to spend on a range of smoking solutions, which are due to be completed by May 2007."

Yep, exactly the way I'm thinking, after all, you ban smoking and you will lose customers, the longer you can keep the smoking customers coming in, the more money you make IMO anyways......................... and I'm a non-smoker BTW

Planning ahead for the inevitable, not leading the way as in Salu's example.

Re: Why wait til July 1st
I'm looking forward to non-smoking on the rail platforms. There's nothing worse than having ash flicked on your from one side and smoke in your face from the other.

Very true - GNER trains have been non-smoking since last year, but I saw the guard having a crafty ciggie as the train pulled away from the platform the other month... (It was a Leeds originating train if anyone from GNER is looking in....)

Nah! There all behind the train sheds having a fag.
I'm a smoker by the way.

Re: Why wait til July 1st
As a non-smoker, I have for a long while chosen the less smoky pubs. Those with non-smoking areas have always been my preference. I might be able to tolerate the smoke while I'm at the venue, but when I consider putting even a coat on next day I want to throw up.
What I find astounding is those pubs that have their head in the sand, and are remaining entirely free for all until the last minute. They just do not get my custom.
Ultimately this is not about health for me, after all going to the pub for me involves more booze than is good for you, it's about comfort and lifestyle preference.
