Foreign TV
Russ B closed a thread, when somebody mentioned watching Foreign TV.
It appears that there are several p2p programs and some other software (is that p2p too?) to watch foreign tv.
What is illegal about it?
Can I watch abc/cbs/nbc news legaly? why not
Can I watch ESPN legally?
How can Skype can claim that is the first to bring p2p tv?
How do they stream it? A camera in front of the TV or hijacking the digital stream?
Please do not put any illegal (why?) links that will make the mods lock this thread...

I need to start counting the number of times I refer to the Copyright, Designs And Patents Act 1988 on this forum

Assuming they haven't given their permission, no. Add one to the count.

Probably hire lots of really good artists, give them lots of coloured pencils, sit them in front of the telly and get them to draw very very fast what appears on the screen

Why not? BBC News 24 is available worldwide.

Because the licence for the programs is only for the UK. Sometimes they're only for England or Scotland (for example) - the other nation gets a different program . Either you really don't understand or you're trying to provoke a reastion from the members in this thread.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Basically it's so the program production company can make as much money as possible. If they let the BBC show their program all over Europe they couldn't sell it to all the other countries could they!
The same with DVD's Games etc.
Why do you think you don't get BBC Prime or BBC America here?

I seem to recall that there are some bits of the planet that aren't in the US. And anyway, these channels won't be 'free' as such - the content producers will have signed contracts with certain broadcasters allowing them to broadcast the channels for free - they'll retain the rights to charge in every other market and on every other medium.

Going from that article it looks like it'll be like youtube only with fewer, original content producers, and presumably nothing worth watching except old stuff that doesn't attract any revenue any more. Can't see it being live streaming - who has the bandwidth for that, even these days?

Exactly. And if you are from Hong Kong living here, you will want to watch some "home" channels...

Or if you want to watch sporting events that are one Sky. Example: Champion's league and premiership matches that are broadcast on Sky in the UK are broadcast on terrestrial channels in some other countries. If you were to watch them on the internet Sky would not be too happy.

Re: Foreign TV
If you are seriously interested in foreign TV then I suggest you get a FTA satellite receiver and a dish with a motor. Assuming you have a good view of the sky then you'll probably be able to receive most FTA channels eminating from satellites between 55E and 30W - some 2000+ TV channels and 2000+ radio channels. Because they are Free-To-Air, this is all totally legal.
Check out the satellite and channel list here:
http://en.kingofsat.net/satellites.php?s=pos
Note that the table is arranged awkwardly. Look for satellites between 2E and 55E and then between 0.8W and 30W. 0 degrees East is the same as 0 degrees West.
