Did something very stupid...
I went to start my car this morning (Peugeot 307 HDi) and it was sounding very rough and belching out blue smoke from the exhaust. Turns out I accidentally put a tenner's worth of petrol in the tank last night instead of diesel.
Thankfully I only drove it for about 3 miles in this state, but it looks like the repair is going to cost me about £350.
That'll teach me not to fuel up my car when I'm tired in future!

Re: Did something very stupid...
Before you go spending that kind of cash get yourself registered on a peugeot forum and get some advice from other owners. I've read about this before, and the extent of the damage often determines the cost.
Good luck

£350???? Don't pay that, whatever you do. I did exactly the same to my mondeo 2.0 tdci, drove about the same distance etc etc. It cost me £140 to get fixed, including a new filter and disposal of the petrol. Did you get recovered? If so, is £350 the quote from the recovery companies choice of garage?

Good luck in getting in it all sorted out.
It's so annoying when you are tired, your mind just drifts off completly. Happens to me too.

Re: Did something very stupid...
They had 307 HDi's at my fathers works before he retired and this happened a few times with the dozy sale guys.
Cost alot less than that did, I would shop around first you could save well over £150.

Re: Did something very stupid...
my old man filled up his diesel car (landrover) at a motorway services - unfortunately he unwittingly pulled up at the (high pressure) pump used by the massive juggernauts...
This would have filled his car in a few seconds if the pressure hadn't blown the hose out of the car's filler cap... still makes me laugh to this day!

Re: Did something very stupid...
I used to work for Texaco, you'd be surprised at the number of people who put the wrong fuel in their vehicle. Once you'd worked in a filling station for a while you got to know the cars and there fuels, if I spotted someone attempting to put the wrong fuel in I'd use the forecourt intercom to check with them before arming the pump. Use to happen at least once a shift.

Re: Did something very stupid...
I though you can put a mixture of petrol and diesel in a diesel car? The manual for my last car (vectra) says if it is -20C or less you put a 1/4 petrol in. (I may have dreamt that!)

Was it a direct injection Vectra though?
-20C is very cold, and diesel would be rather thick, so put extra strain on your fuel pump, petrol would help thin it out.
Personally, I'd get an in tank heater at those temps!

Re: Did something very stupid...
Didn't mythbusters come up with that some cars still ran on petrol in a diesel once?

Well they do run, just not very well and the damage done when using petrol can be catastrophic if prolonged.

Well at my local garage the diesel pumps don't fit in my Nissan..I know because I've obviously tried.

Different sized nozzles is one way the petrol companies are trying to stop these sort of accidents. There is a lot more colour coding of pumps now and clearer signs. When someone puts the wrong fuel in, the first thing they do is blame the petrol retailer. I've been threatened by an irate driver more than once. It can be inconvenient for the retailer too, as they have to double check to make sure the pump is delivering what it should. It does happen very, very occasionally that the wrong fuel is put in the wrong tanks during delivery. It never happened to me luckily, instant dismissal if it had.
