Mr Day
I've been visiting the same optician for 20 years - Mr Day. He took over the practice from Mr Goldwyn, when he retired. My mum has been visiting the practice since she was little - best part of half a century. Mr Day also looked after my sister's eyes, until she moved North. There used to be two branches - one in Leeds and another in Armley - but the Leeds one closed. I can still remember it well. I learned today that Mr Day was killed in a car accident about a year ago. I'd not had my eyes tested for some time, hence my not knowing until now. Was a terrible shock. A lovely, thoroughly decent and professional man. My family were poor, living on benefits due to my dad being disabled, and Mr Day provided special offers to ensure that we could afford the frames - the lenses were provided by the NHS. Such a decent man - really cared for his patients.
Sometimes life is hard to fathom

Re: Mr Day
Very sorry to hear about that - it's always a bonus when a family doctor or in your case, optician is a genuinely nice person because you get the impression they really do care about you as you grow up.

That is sad to hear. Often the nicest people leave the world far too early.

Indeed He does move in mysterious ways.

I believe in people, anything else is just myth and rumour.

OK. Returning to the original content.
It's always sad when you find out someone you knew has died, especially when you find out about it a long time after the event. You aren't able to join in with the communal grieving that takes place and perhaps you feel it's inappropriate to make too much of it now. Just celebrate the persons life in your own way, a silent prayer or maybe a donation to a charity linked to their occupation.

I posted that as the thread which started about the death of someone was, in my opinion, going to turn into a religious debate of which there are plenty already on the site.
I posted that to nip any such arguments in the bud and get the thread back to what it was originally created for.

He's a new mod, bless him. Reminds me of my first time as a mod - for Comic Relief. I waded in, trying to be constructive, and managed to upset everything. Just takes time Who are you, Derek - need to put your old name in your sig!
Thanks for the kind words. I spoke to my mum, who was equally shocked at the news.
