UK Road Safety

I've always thought those road safety ads were good, but one that has always scared me is this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdhqbqoa5bQ (Wear your seatbelt)

After watching that one, from a little age i've always wore my seatbelt!

These are some other ones i found:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXX7IKuChU4 (Dont drink and drive)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB535w7eZNM (Seatbelt #2)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnbWQLTDNnc (Look Before Crossing)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnm8m2x0lpw (Take longer to look for bikes)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au-QNuiuRTE (Give road full attn)

Yup, good old Denis Leary

The thing that got me to wear a seat belt (given that until 81 we didn't have a car with rear belts) was our first car with them.
Daisy, a yellow and white Chevrolette Blazer just like this one

She only had lap belts in the back, and I refused to wear them, being an awkward 4 year old at the time (I was cute though).
Dad said fine, moved the car about a foot forward and stamped on the powerful brakes.
I flew into the back of his seat (actually scared the life out of him too) and lightning fast was back in my seat with my belt on.
Now I just don't feel comfortable in a car unless I'm wearing a seatbelt, and I've asked people to get out before if they've refused to buckle up in the back.

Re: UK Road Safety

Anyone seen any of the Australian Road Safety ads (as featured on Chris Tarrant's programme?) Some of those are truly shocking, and I believe similar ads have been made and shown in Northern Ireland - some of them still upset me, and we've used the videos in work for a few years now. Can't find any links to any of them atm. Shame our ads aren't a bit more hard hitting, really.

I agree. I also think such ads could be aimed at cyclists as well; they have as much of a responsibility as drivers to use the roads safely. I'd particularly want them to run an ad which shows a cyclist with his brains all over the road because he wasn't wearing a helmet. They might (well, TBH, they do) look dorky, but IMO a cyclist looks a damn sight dorkier laid out in a hospital mortuary because he didn't "look cool" wearing a helmet.

Twenty quid or so against the rest of your life? Looking daft or being dead? No-brainer, surely. The £9.99 I spent on my first helmet (in 1999) was the best damn tenner I ever spent, because it was all that saved my life. Without it, I would have been that cyclist in the ad I'd like them to make. I have no clue why helmets still aren't compulsory when head injuries are by far the biggest killer of cyclists. It makes no sense even by the deranged standards of this Government.

Or - if you'll forgive the cynicism - do they want us to get killed so they don't have to bother creating cycle lanes? Or so we'll be put off riding bikes because it's too bloody dangerous and force us to use 'public' transport?

Re: UK Road Safety

You know in supermarkets they have the notice board where people can put up cards with ads?
In Saudi they have similar board, but instead of being for customer ads, they contain photographs of serious car accidents to show people what can go wrong on the roads.
