London Underground
I went up to London yesterday with my mum to the Christmas show at the Islington Design Centre and we went up on the Tube. Now this got me thinking, and i would like to if possible, apply for a drivers position. Now i heard from a friend that you have to be 21 to do this, but there is also another thing that would not allow me to do it. and that is my eyesight. Now my question is, where can i find the requirements to be a tube driver and if there are, do they require you to have an eye examination?

Re: London Underground
I found this on the web
They look for fit and alert individuals with excellent eyesight and good hearing. A basic understanding of mechanics is also useful, as drivers often deal with faults on the train. Drivers must also have a sense of responsibility, be punctual and reliable, and be good at keeping calm in emergencies. Skill at dealing with people is also an advantage.
Each driver follows a training course and sits exams. Courses last from 22 weeks (London Underground) to 48 weeks (GNER).
Looks like your eyesight may let you down
I am sure there is more info out there but I don't have time to look at the moment as I need to go out.

Re: London Underground
I've seen Tube drivers wearing spectacles - it can't hurt to ask.

Wayne, surely you must realise that good eyesight is one of the most important things in driving, underground or on the road. Just cos it's on tracks and you don't steer as you would on the road, you have to be able to spot any potential dangers and react accordingly.....

Re: London Underground
Why- how bad is your eyesight? Surely if having corrective lenses helps then they should accommodate for that.

Re: London Underground
I'd like to know what you might bump into, thus the need for "excellent eyesight". There might be the odd tramp or animal down there, but you have windscreen wipers to clear the screen, so no problem there. Otherwise, I can't imagine there being anything to hit

Re: London Underground
I think it's a good idea to be able to drive - or at least have your own transport - and to live reasonably near to the start/end of the lines - some of the shifts start very early (4am) and finish late, there won't be much public transport about at those times.

This is not a problem. They get a paid-by-the-tube-company taxi ride. There was a strike recently by SWT stuff for the very same reason.
