Wearing Poppies
I went to the supermarket earlier today with my son, and we stopped to buy 2 poppies from a war veteran. Walking inside the supermarket, my poppy dropped on the floor. After a few seconds, when I had realised I'd lost it, I turned around and saw a family pick up the poppy, and stick it on one of the family member's jacket.
This kinda threw me... the family had walked past the war veteran seconds earlier and chose not to donate and have a poppy of their own, yet they were happy to pick up someone else's poppy from the floor.
This is still playing on my mind. Is the most important thing to donate (irrespective of the amount donated) and show your support by wearing a poppy, or just the fact that you're wearing a poppy - even if you didn't buy it yourself, and just picked it up off the floor?
Sorry if this seems like a daft post to make, but I'd appreciate others' thoughts on this, as it's still bugging me.

Re: Wearing Poppies
I'd suggest they make a donation, before I announced to all and sundry in a loud voice what I'd seen them do.

Re: Wearing Poppies
Some people make a donation, yet don't buy a poppy, choosing to keep using an old one, reducing wastage and allowing someone else to buy a new one.
Perhaps they'd donated elsewhere or without you seeing, and picked up your poppy thinking it was discarded so that they could wear one, or perhaps they believed the poppy was one the family member had worn but also lost and only just noticed?
To me the donation is the important part, as it actually helps, while wearing the poppy (still important) highlights the cause and reminds others to donate.
If it was the case that they were wearing a poppy with no donation, then I'd go along with DW.

Re: Wearing Poppies
Kind of highlights the attitude of some people these days As long as they wear it people THINK they actually care about the reasons behind the poppy even though they blatantly couldn't give a sh*t. We've just got back from Tesco and some ignorant cow allowed her child to continue walking up and down an aisle talking to her very loudly whilst the rest of the supermarket was silent. Did she ask her to stay quiet for 2 minutes? Did she tell her why the store was silent? Did she ignore everyone else who was looking at her and just continue to discuss toys with the child whilst walking up and down the aisle..... I'll let you guess.

Re: Wearing Poppies
The sacrifices these people made is because they didnt live in a free country they were told to go a fight and if they didnt they were shot. WWI has to be one of the most stupidest wastes of life in the history of mankind " hey you guys just walk accross that field dont warry about the machine guns" " yes sir no problem" what a waste. I remember those who died but I also know it was because of those in power they did

i'll put me tin hat on and agree with that, and jon snow's comments re "poppy facism". its not that i dont recognise or respect the sacrifices made, but i'm not sure i should be made to feel like i should buy a poppy or be silent - or become a social leper.

We remember, its such a shame that country leaders around the world apparently don't, or just don't care.
