Children in Need 2006
So, it's the Appeal Night next Friday... is anyone doing anything special for Children in Need this year?
Like, shaving heads, bathing in beans, that sort of thing

Re: Children in Need 2006
no. because I think more of the money should be spent in this country, and that money spent on aid abroad should be put towards sex education in those countries where we see starving babies. people should be taught to look after themselves first, and then have babies - if you can look after them... I would love to have babies, but I'm not going to rely on other people to feed my baby?

"Thank you!
Every penny you give goes towards helping children and young people in the UK."
All the money from Children in Need is used in the UK.
I think you may be thinking of Comic Relief.

A lot of the money i think does come to England for our babies in need.
And i see what your saying, but it isn't the kid's fault that their parents abandoned/abused them
<edit- just seen forever wars post

Re: Children in Need 2006
oh, ok then. I would consider cin over comic relief. I still think children in care in this country get quite enough £ already (I worked for social services for a year)! I know I sound 'tight' but I just hope that the money raised is distributed to charities that don't get much state funding.

Re: Children in Need 2006
yep i'll be watching on as jonathan ross encourages us to give. hang on, is that the jonathan woss who is getting 18 million smackeroos for three years work. people might want to ponder why we need children in need, especially as it tends to be the poor who give more (and cant tax dodge either).
<off> rant

that'll be the totally inadequately funded social services - here at least where we have precisely no care homes for example (mind you, the outsourcing must be costing a bob or two).

L,
it all goes to charities, none of it goes to local authorities -
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/whoyouhelp/
Regarding your comment on people in care get enough - some figures that may contradict that -
http://www.nlcas.org/
Despite the efforts of Government, local authorities and voluntary organisations to improve the life chances of children in care and care leavers, these young people are still among the groups most likely to be socially excluded.- Around 6,000 young people aged 16 or over cease to be looked after in England every year.
- 3,300 (50%) of them were aged 16-17 when they left care; most of the remaining 3,280 (49%) left on their 18th birthday. In contrast, the average age at which young people leave home now is 24.
- 54% of young people left care without any GCSE/GNVQ qualification; only 6% got 5 GCSEs at Grades A*-C in comparison to 50% of all young people.
- As few as 1% of young people leaving care go on to university.
- Estimates for the number of 16-24 year olds who have been in care who are unemployed range from 50% to 80%.
- 17% of young women leaving care are pregnant or already mothers.
- Looked-after young people are over-represented in the youth-justice system and in populations of people who are homeless or have slept rough.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/5273986.stm
"Barnardo's claimed multiple care home and foster care placements, repeated school changes, exclusion and insufficient support all contributed to a cycle of disadvantage.
Findings of the report included: - More than half reported being bullied at school as a direct result of being in care.
- Four out of 10 said no-one had attended their school parents' evenings.
- Nearly half said no-one went to sports days or other school events.
- The number of care placements young people had lived in varied between one and 30 - half had been in more than four placements.
- More than half were not currently in employment, training or education.
- Almost half the group had attended six or more schools and 11% had attended more than 10.
Barnardo's said an NOP poll of 500 parents of children who took their GCSEs this year illustrated the contrast between experiences. This found that 58% had never moved home, 96% had attended their child's parents' evenings and just 6% were expecting their child to leave school with no qualifications."

Re: Children in Need 2006
Is the forum doing anything this year? I believe last year (which I missed) people paid to be mods for the day.
