What can I do here?

I signed up for a free trial with a online rental site for Video games. In there FAQ it states they only need the debit card number to verify my details. But the have pre approved a months subscription from my account now.

I signed up originally as when the free trial ended I would of had the money to pay them so presumed this would be ok.

The money they pre approved is now on hold and was taken from my child benefits and tax credits.

Can I do anything?

Re: What can I do here?

Have you asked them to refund and cancel your account?

Re: What can I do here?

I would suggest you cancel your membership. This sounds like what AOL used to do, when I made the mistake of signing up for them for Dialup. They take your credit card number when you apply for a trial. What they don't tell you (or at least they bury it in the terms and conditions somewhere) is that if you don't cancel the account before the end of the trial, they will assume you want to carry on, and start charging.

They just sent a email back stating this

We don't tie the money up. Some banks will treat this as a pending
transaction, which is incorrect, but it will always clear within a day
or two. We can't release it, as we didn't request it to be held.

Re: What can I do here?

Phone the bank, and ask them to cancel the payment, if it's an authorisation it will stay on your account for a week or two, or unless they charge it before that time.
The bank can release the money in this case.
