Scary Movies
Anyone see the countdown on C5 last night?
http://www.five.tv/programmes/greate...ies/countdown/
Not sure I agree with it, though I've seen most of the movies and the majority I really like. Scanning through the list...
Candyman I found disturbing - about the loss of hope and embracing fate. The Exorcist was a giggle - you could be forgiven for thinking that many of today's kids are subject to demonic possession. Seven and Silence of the Lambs are brilliant thrillers, borderline horror. Alien is in a class of its own.
The only ones on the list that I really found scary were Poltergeist, The Fog, and the Sixth Sense. Some are boring, such as Blair Witch, and others are more gross than anything, such as The Fly.
Oh and I loved Carrie - the revenge of the bullied. Go girl

Re: Scary Movies
I wonder when we will be able to have The 100 greatest "100 greatest programs" program.
Watched Alien the other night there - class movie - i was able to see it when i was about 9, scared the bejesus out of me, but i love it all the more for that because it associates the film with real fear for me.

Re: Scary Movies
I found out the other day that in the bit where the alien bursts out of John Hurt's chest, the rest of the cast were not told what would happen so their looks of disgust and shock as it all happened were real. Definately a ground breaking film.

Ridley Scott did say in an interview that he thought he would get a more realistic reaction that way..
It's not a horror, but the director of Ronin did a similar thing to Robert De Niro and Natasha McElhone in that film. There is an amazing car chase at the end, and to get a realistic look of Fear on the Actors' faces, he had them sit in the car while the Stunt men were rehearsing. He also had the stunt men perform the rehearsal at full speed (75+MPH)

That was said by one of the actresses last night on the programme.
I watched it last night, and i don't really think Alien should have been number 1, but then i guess it is about being a great movie, and not just the scariest movies.
I realised last night that i haven't watched most of the best known all the way through, and i love a good horror movie!
I never 'got' the Blair Witch Project at all, so i still don't know why that was in there...

Re: Scary Movies
I deliberately gave this one a miss - I jump at the least little thing, even the monsters in Dr Who catch me out (much to Paul's great amusement!) I'd have had nightmares for weeks!

Re: Scary Movies
Anything with Mary-Kate and Ashley in it - that frightens me!

Re: Scary Movies
I love scary movies! Blair Witch Project is one of my favourite films - I think its brilliance comes from you hearing noises in the woods and its left to your own imagination as to what you think is going on. I don't know what I'd put in my top xx though! Has anyone else seen the subliminal stuff in the Exorcist - like the cartoon-like skulls?

I had the Alien Quadrilogy box set... 9 DVD's! Was a stunning set. LOTS and LOTS of extraa. It was 2 films per disc; the original theatrical verison and the directors cut/special editon of each movie, plus some extras. Then, on disc 9 was loads more extras.

Yeah. Similar thing with the Exorcist, apparently - the director kept firing a shotgun to keep the cast nervous. Just blanks though

Re: Scary Movies
Alien.... excellent. Don't think it's that scary though.
The Exorcist... boring, with the occasional unintentionally funny bit.
The Ring... one of the few on that list I'd truly say is actually scary.
Blair Witch... crap.
The Bone Collector... WTF? Not scary, & pretty lame.
