Hallowe'en 2006

HI All, Saying as its only 2 weeks away, are any of you dressing up? if so what as?
Is your area doing anything for it?
I am thinking of doing up my own Duffman costume.
My Work is allowing free drinks after working hours, provided you come in dressed up, so will have to give that a shout.

Re: Hallowe'en 2006

Perhaps unsurprisingly, our household has no plans to spend the evening celebrating the Prince of Darkness.

Re: Hallowe'en 2006

My brothers wife has all her inside decorations up already (and its a lot) and is doing their graveyard in their side garden this weekend. She has loads of stuff that shes picked up over the years and brought back from America. I think she may have more Halloween decorations than Christmas ones!

Will be at hers for a party as per usual, she works in catering and goes OTT on making the food spooky too, can't wait. Though going to the bathroom is an event in itself, normally something there to scare you too.

Re: Hallowe'en 2006

I love it. Me and the kids make the spooky pumpkin halloween heads and I make up nice and messy food games for them. I decorate the house, and we dress up too. People get invited over, and if it's not wet or too cold, we'll have a bbq too. It's also my stepsons birthday on the 31st, so we make it extra special for him.

Do you mean you'll spend the day celebrating the Prince? Presumably you'll draw the curtains...

Actually, according to Wiki, Old Nick has nothing to do with it...

I'll be learning to swish and flick with my nice shiny new stick .... Now I may well 'accidentally' swish any trick or treaters I come across...

...Actually we're gonna spend an evening doing halloween stuff when I get back from my lesson...

My neighbour is making a pumpkin lantern with Peter.

that's a bit cruel - why doesn't he use a pumpkin like everyone else?

As with many festivals, the modern version has little to do with the origin ... A lot of the old ideas about pixies and mischief rather than evil and terror still persist in Scotland, where many Hallowe'en parties are still about dressing up (as anything you like, not as a spook or monster) and doing party tricks. They call it 'guising'. Mrs T was always confused by the annual panto we used to have to endure in Hemel Hempstead, where it was all about being as gory as you could and throwing eggs and flour at random old ladies' front windows.

Nevertheless as with many things, it gets exported to the Yanks who tinker with it and then export it back, and even here it's becoming more about ghouls and goblins and trick-or-treat. We visited a toy shop the other week which had gone hell-for-leather (literally!) on its Hallowe'en stock. They had a six-foot, motion sensitive mummy complete with groaning sound effects and flashing rotten eyeballs and a disembodied head in an illuminated plastic sphere. Our poor four-year-old wanted to go in and look at the toys but he emerged in a very sorry state. The stuff they had in there was beyond a joke or a novelty, it was terrifying, especially for a very little person. How on earth do you explain to someone that age that it's supposed to be fun?
